Table Lamps

Light at hand height, moved around from one evening to the next.

Table lamps are the freest lights in the home: you move them, pair them, take them to another room as the seasons change. Our selection is built on materials, with ceramic, opal glass, a brass-tone gold finish and a wood-look table lamp under a pleated shade. The cordless rechargeable lamp in black metal sits on a dining table or a patio, and the solar lamp in cut-out metal does without an outlet altogether. Mushroom lamps in opal glass, pâte de verre-look glass or 70s burgundy complete the collection. For the bedroom, see our bedside lamps, for the round silhouette our mushroom lamps, and for the floor our floor lamps.

Where table lamps change a room

One well-placed lamp is often enough to make a room feel warm, and living room table lamps work best in a triangle: three points of light at different heights, spread around the room, rather than a single source. On an entry console, a lamp welcomes you as the door opens and lights a mirror hung above it. On a sideboard, two matching lamps frame a picture. On a side table, a lamp by the sofa lets you read without switching on the ceiling light. On a shelf or a bookcase, a small table lamp creates depth between the books. On a desk, the light should come from the side opposite your writing hand, to avoid a cast shadow.

What size table lamp to choose

A table lamp's height is chosen with its surface. A tall console takes a large table lamp, a low side table a stockier one. Next to a sofa, the bottom of the shade should sit at the eye level of a seated person, about 39 to 43 in (100 to 110 cm) from the floor. Above that, the light reaches you without glare.

Surface Suggested lamp height Rule of thumb
Entry console, 30 to 35 in (75 to 90 cm) 22 to 30 in (55 to 75 cm) Shade narrower than half the console
Low sideboard, 24 to 31 in (60 to 80 cm) 20 to 28 in (50 to 70 cm) One lamp at each end, or a single one off-center
Side table by the sofa 18 to 26 in (45 to 65 cm) Bottom of the shade at about 39 to 43 in (100 to 110 cm) from the floor
Desk 14 to 20 in (35 to 50 cm) Light source below seated eye level
Shelf, bookcase 8 to 14 in (20 to 35 cm) Leave 4 in (10 cm) above the lamp

Ceramic, brass-look, glass or wood-look: modern table lamps as objects

On or off, a lamp stays in view all day. That is why its material matters as much as its light. Ceramic, matte or glazed, brings a handmade roundness and goes with sand, clay and terracotta tones. A brass-look gold finish plays with warm reflections, to pair with dark wood or marble. An opal glass globe is a sculptural object, to set on its own on a console or a windowsill. The wood-look lamp and its pleated shade make a soft, natural Scandinavian table lamp. The mushroom models and the 70s spirit add a touch of color and curve, a vintage table lamp that gives character to a plain interior.

Getting ambient light right with table lamps for living room use

An ambient living room lamp is not meant to light the whole room: it creates pools of light. Choose a 2700 K color temperature, warm and restful, and 200 to 500 lumens depending on use. A linen or pale fabric shade spreads light all around, an opaque shade directs it down and up. Opal glass, for its part, lights up entirely like a globe. In the evening, switch off the ceiling light and keep two or three lamps on: the room instantly gains depth.

Cordless, bulbs and care

A cordless rechargeable table lamp is free of outlet constraints: it finds a place in the middle of a dining table, on a sheltered patio or in a bookcase. Recharge it regularly and keep it out of the rain, unless the product page says otherwise. For corded models, check the socket and maximum wattage listed, and choose an LED bulb under a fabric shade, as it runs cool. For care, a dry cloth is enough for ceramic, glass and wood-look finishes. Gold finishes are cleaned with a soft cloth, without abrasive products. Always unplug the lamp before cleaning it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01What height table lamp for a console?
On a console 30 to 35 in (75 to 90 cm) high, choose a lamp of 22 to 30 in (55 to 75 cm). The shade should not be wider than half the console, to leave room for a catchall tray or a few books.
02How many table lamps in a living room?
Two to three lamps, at different heights and spread around the room, create balanced ambient light. For example, combine one on a sideboard, one by the sofa and a small one on a shelf.
03What bulb for a table lamp with a fabric shade?
A 2700 K LED bulb, which runs cool and gives warm light, without exceeding the maximum wattage shown on the product page. Check the socket too. A frosted bulb keeps the bright point from showing through the fabric.
04Can a cordless rechargeable table lamp go outside?
It can join a dinner on the patio, but bring it in afterward and do not leave it in the rain, unless its product page lists an IP rating suited to outdoor use. Recharge it indoors, somewhere dry.
05How do I clean ceramic or gold table lamps?
Unplug the lamp, then wipe ceramic with a dry or slightly damp cloth. For a brass-look gold finish, use a soft, dry cloth with no abrasive product to protect the finish. Dust a fabric shade with a soft brush.
