Pendant Lighting

One shape hanging over the table, and the whole room gathers around it.

Pendant lighting gives a room its center: above a table, an island or in the middle of the living room, it holds both the eye and the light. Our collection offers the pendant lamp in the materials we love: hand-woven rattan and bamboo at 16 in (40 cm), Japanese-style natural wood, beige linen, a 16 in (40 cm) Japanese paper globe and a paper cloud, amber or gray smoked glass from 6 to 14 in (15 to 35 cm), small white glass globes, a glass flower shade with a copper finish and an industrial black metal pendant. For an island, the 47 in (120 cm) linear LED pendant lines up the light. For a higher or lower ceiling, see our chandeliers and ceiling lights.

What size pendant light to choose

For the center of a room, a simple rule gives a ballpark: add the length and width of the room in feet, and the result is an indicative diameter in inches. A 13 × 13 ft (4 × 4 m) room therefore takes a pendant of about 24 to 26 in (60 to 65 cm). Above a table, the diameter follows the tabletop: count roughly half the table's width, and leave at least 12 in (30 cm) between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table.

Situation Recommended size Height of the pendant's bottom
Round table, 35 to 43 in (90 to 110 cm) One pendant, 16 to 24 in (40 to 60 cm) 26 to 31 in (65 to 80 cm) above the tabletop
Rectangular table, 71 in (180 cm) Two at 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm), or a 47 in (120 cm) linear 26 to 31 in (65 to 80 cm) above the tabletop
Kitchen island, 59 to 79 in (150 to 200 cm) Two or three 8 in (20 cm) domes, or a linear 28 to 35 in (70 to 90 cm) above the counter
Center of the living room or bedroom 16 to 24 in (40 to 60 cm) depending on the room At least 7 ft (2.1 m) above the floor

Pendant lighting, room by room

Dining room. This is where pendants shine. A dining room pendant should light the tabletop without dazzling seated guests: prefer an opaque shade or frosted glass to a bare bulb.

Kitchen. Above an island, hanging lights are repeated: two or three smoked or white glass globes spaced 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) apart, or a single linear LED pendant. Smooth materials, glass and metal, are easier to clean of grease splatters.

Living room. A 16 in (40 cm) Japanese paper globe spreads soft light across the whole room. A rattan pendant, more graphic, draws shadows on the ceiling.

Bedroom. A bedroom hanging lamp benefits from being enveloping: linen, paper or rattan. Place it in the center of the room or offset above the foot of the bed, never above the headboard.

Entryway and stairwell. In a stairwell, adjust the cord length so the fixture is visible from both levels. Keep the bulb accessible so you can change it without scaffolding.

Rattan, wood, glass or metal: choosing the material

Natural fibers, rattan and linen, bring a warm boho note. Rattan projects patterns of light, linen filters and softens it. Japanese-style natural wood and paper make a Japandi pendant, clean and calm. Smoked glass, amber or gray, dims the light; white glass diffuses it evenly. The glass flower shade with a polished copper finish directs light downward and reflects a coppery halo, ideal above a table. Finally, industrial black metal brings a graphic line to a kitchen or loft, a classic of modern pendant lighting. For a Scandinavian pendant, pair light wood with white glass.

Low ceiling, high ceiling

Under a low ceiling, below about 7 ft 10 in (2.4 m), keep the pendant above furniture, a table or an island, so it does not block the way, or choose a flat design. With a high or cathedral ceiling, a pendant has to come down toward the living space: a long cord and a large diameter globe avoid the feeling of light lost overhead. Check the cord length listed on the product page and whether it can be shortened.

Bulb, dimmer and installation

Check the bulb base and maximum wattage on each product page. With a fiber or paper shade, choose an LED bulb, which stays cool. Light at 2700 K suits living spaces. For multiple pendants or lamps on a dimmer, choose bulbs marked dimmable. Before installing, switch off the power at the breaker and make sure the ceiling hook supports the weight. A pendant in a bathroom must respect the safety zones and the required IP rating: if in doubt, call an electrician.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01How high should a pendant light hang over a table?
The bottom of the pendant sits 26 to 31 in (65 to 80 cm) above the tabletop. Lower, it blocks the view between guests; higher, it dazzles and lights the table less. For a kitchen island, count 28 to 35 in (70 to 90 cm) above the counter.
02What diameter pendant for a dining table?
Aim for about half the table's width, and keep 12 in (30 cm) between the edge of the shade and the edge of the table. For a 71 in (180 cm) table, two pendants of 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) or a 47 in (120 cm) linear spread the light better.
03How many pendant lights over a kitchen island?
Two or three small pendants for a 59 to 79 in (150 to 200 cm) island, spaced 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) apart and centered on the counter. A 47 in (120 cm) linear LED pendant is a simple alternative, with a single connection point.
04Which pendant works with a low ceiling?
Below about 7 ft 10 in (2.4 m), hang the pendant over a table or island, where no one walks underneath. In the center of a room people walk through, choose a ceiling light: it gives as much light without reducing headroom.
05What bulb should go in a rattan or paper pendant?
An LED bulb, which runs much cooler than a halogen, with a wattage below the maximum listed on the product page. A 2700 K tone flatters natural fibers. Also check the model's bulb base before buying.
06Can I install a pendant light in a bathroom?
Yes, outside the zones close to the tub and shower, and with a protection rating suited to the location. Installation rules are strict in this room: check the IP rating on the product page and call an electrician if in doubt.
