Rectangle Mirrors

The straight line, to enlarge without ever dominating.

A rectangle mirror is the most versatile of all: vertical, it lengthens a wall; horizontal, it widens a room. Our selection runs from a thin-framed 20 × 20 in (50 × 50 cm) square mirror to a long 65 × 21 in (164 × 54 cm) wall mirror, by way of a 14.5 × 44 in (37 × 112 cm) jewelry armoire wall mirror. Styles are many: natural wood, black frame, window pane, industrial, a Hollywood mirror with bulbs. There are also LED models for the bathroom and standing versions for the bedroom. Depending on the room, see our bathroom mirrors and our floor mirrors.

Vertical or horizontal: the effect of a rectangle mirror on the room

A rectangle hung vertically draws the eye upward and makes the ceiling look higher: it is the right way round for an entryway, a hallway, a narrow stretch of wall or a bedroom with a low ceiling. Hung horizontally, a rectangle wall mirror follows a low line of furniture (sideboard, sofa, double vanity) and gives the room width. In a long, narrow living room, a horizontal rectangle on the long wall opens up the space more than any other shape.

Size guide

Size Recommended use
Thin-framed square wall mirror above a console or a small sink, or as a pair
31 × 24 in (80 × 60 cm) 31 in (80 cm) vanity
47 in (120 cm) wide double vanity, 63 to 71 in (160 to 180 cm) sideboard
59 × 14 in (150 × 35 cm) behind a door, in a walk-in closet
71 × 24 in (180 × 60 cm) entryway, bedroom, checking a full outfit

Above furniture, keep to the rule of two thirds to three quarters of its width and 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the frame.

Window pane, overmantel, Venetian: the styles of the rectangle

A window-pane mirror, with its black muntins, creates a false opening on a blank wall: very effective in a hallway or a kitchen. An industrial black metal frame goes with raw wood and concrete. A gilded overmantel mirror with moldings belongs in a period apartment: its width follows the mantel, minus 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm). An antique-style gold mirror and a beveled Venetian continue this classic line. For a softer interior, a natural wood rectangle and a thin black frame remain understated.

Room by room

In the living room, a rectangle hung horizontally above a sideboard or a sofa. In the entryway, a tall vertical rectangle beside the door, the top of the glass at about 71 to 75 in (180 to 190 cm). In the bedroom, a cheval or standing rectangular mirror, lit from the front. In the bathroom, an anti-fog LED model or the black mirror with shelf. In a walk-in closet, the long 65 in (164 cm) mirror. Finally, the Hollywood mirror lights the face from the front on a vanity, and the jewelry armoire hides rings and necklaces behind the glass.

Hanging large sizes

A large rectangle is often heavier than it looks: count about 2 lb per square foot (10 kg per square meter) of 4 mm glass, which comes to nearly 20 lb (9 kg) for a 65 × 21 in (164 × 54 cm) mirror, frame not included. Use two fixing points aligned with a spirit level, or a French cleat that spreads the load across the full width. Check the load rating of the anchors for your wall. A rectangle leaned on the floor against the wall is always secured at the top with a strap.

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01Should a rectangle mirror hang horizontally or vertically?
Vertically to lengthen a wall, in an entryway, a hallway or a low room. Horizontally to widen, above a sideboard, a sofa or a double vanity. Check on the product page that the model can hang in the direction you choose.
02What size rectangle mirror goes above a sideboard?
Aim for two thirds to three quarters of the sideboard's width: about 47 in (120 cm) wide for a 63 to 71 in (160 to 180 cm) sideboard. Leave 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the frame, so there is room for a lamp.
03How do I hang a large, heavy rectangle wall mirror?
Use two fixing points aligned with a level, or a French cleat that spreads the load. Choose anchors suited to your wall and check their load rating. If you are unsure about a drywall wall, get advice before drilling.
04Where should a window-pane rectangle mirror go?
On a blank wall, in a hallway or a kitchen: its black muntins imitate a studio window and create a false opening. Above a sideboard or console, keep 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the frame.
