Gold Mirrors

A thread of gold around the reflection, and the light turns warmer.

A gold mirror adds warm light to the reflection: its frame catches the glow of lamps and sends it back into the room. The thin gold frame dresses modern shapes: a round of 16, 20 or 24 in (40, 50 or 60 cm), an arch in three sizes, an oval, and a 65 in (164 cm) floor mirror. The vintage-style metal sunburst, 24 to 35 in (60 to 90 cm) across, offers a more decorative version. The double-sided gold round table mirror sits on a vanity. For a specific shape, see our round mirrors or arched mirrors.

Bright gold, brass, antique gold: telling the finishes apart

Not all gold finishes are alike. Bright gold reflects a lot of light and stands out from a distance: it suits dark rooms and dressier interiors. Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, offers a softer, slightly rosy gold that develops a patina over time. Antique gold, with darker tones, imitates old frames and goes with moldings. Look at the photos on each product page to judge the true shade; screen lighting often makes them look brighter.

Thin frame or moldings: a gold framed mirror, modern or classic

A thin gold frame is the most versatile: a simple line of gold around the glass, with no visual weight. It suits a contemporary, warm Japandi or boho chic interior. Moldings belong to another register: the overmantel above a fireplace, the antique-style mirror in a period apartment, the Art Deco fan in an entryway. The metal sunburst sits between the two, more decorative than functional.

Pairing a gold wall mirror with the rest of the decor

Gold goes with medium and dark woods, marble, velvet, and sage green, navy or terracotta walls. On a pure white wall, it looks colder: a slightly off-white suits it better. Mixing metals works, as long as one dominates: a gold mirror with brass handles and a black lamp, yes; three different golds on the same wall, no. One gold mirror per wall is enough to set the tone. Think about the light too: facing a window, the frame shines by day; near a shaded lamp, it takes on a warmer, almost amber tone in the evening that softens the whole room.

Gold mirror size and placement

A large gold mirror above a fireplace follows the width of the mantel, minus 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm). Above a console or sideboard, the two-thirds rule applies, with 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the frame. The 16 in (40 cm) gold round fits in a powder room, above a small sink or in a gallery arrangement. The gold floor mirror warms a bedroom, placed near a lamp whose glow it will reflect.

Caring for a gold frame

Gilding dislikes water, household cleaners and rubbing. Dust the frame with a dry microfiber cloth, or a soft brush for moldings. For the glass, spray the cleaner on the cloth, never on the mirror, and stop a few millimeters short of the frame. Ban ammonia, vinegar and abrasive sponges on gold metal: they dull the finish for good. Gold aluminum frames do not rust and keep their color: a dry cloth is enough.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01How do I clean a gold mirror without damaging the frame?
Dust the frame with a dry cloth or a soft brush. For the glass, put the cleaner on the microfiber and stop before the frame. Avoid ammonia, vinegar and abrasive sponges on the gold finish, which would dull it.
02What wall color goes with a gold mirror?
Sage green, navy, terracotta or off-white walls bring out gold. On a cold pure white, gold looks harsher. Dark walls make it shine more, especially in the evening by lamplight.
03What size gold mirror goes above a fireplace?
Choose a mirror slightly narrower than the mantel, by 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm) in total. A molded overmantel is the classic answer; a large thin-framed round gives a more contemporary version.
04Can I mix a gold mirror with black metal?
Yes, it is a very current pairing, as long as one tone dominates. For example: a gold mirror, a black lamp and brass handles. Avoid several different shades of gold on the same wall.
05Does a gold aluminum frame tarnish over time?
With proper care, no: aluminum does not rust and its gold finish stays stable indoors. Just avoid harsh cleaners and abrasive sponges, which would scratch the surface; a dry cloth is enough.
