Description
Hanging bedside lamps drop from the ceiling over the nightstand, and this one frees up the whole top for a book, a glass of water or a small plant. Its smoked gray glass globe filters the light and gives it an enveloping, almost dimmed tone. A gold brass-look base and an adjustable cord complete this simple design. It suits bedrooms short on space beside the bed, and anyone who likes a muted mood.
Design and materials
The globe is transparent glass tinted smoky gray: you can make out the bulb inside, like an ember at the heart of a bubble. When lit, the glass slightly colors the light and softens its glare; when off, it keeps deep, almost mineral reflections. The base that holds it has a brass-look finish, a gold detail that warms the gray. The whole piece hangs from a cord whose length you adjust. This smoked glass pendant light, with its touch of gold, suits bedrooms in muted tones, terracotta, sage green or midnight blue, as well as lighter japandi interiors, where it adds depth.
The light
The lamp takes one E27 bulb, not included. Since the globe is transparent, the bulb stays visible: a filament or decorative bulb gives the best effect. Choose a warm white, around 2200 to 2700 K, for soft light that winds you down for sleep. The smoked glass dims the output; a 400 to 600 lumen bulb is enough to read in bed. The lamp is not compatible with a dimmer.
Where to put it
In a bedroom, hang one on each side of the bed at the same height for a calming symmetry: a pair of bedside pendant lights. Above a narrow nightstand or a stool, it replaces a table lamp and clears the surface. In the living room, it can also drop over a reading armchair or the end of a sofa. You can play with heights too: one at 20 in (50 cm), the other higher, for a less formal arrangement. More models among our bedside lamps.

Size and installation of hanging bedside lamps
The lamp hangs from the ceiling and is wired to a ceiling electrical box, directly above the nightstand. Turn off the power at the breaker before any work, and call an electrician if in doubt. You will need a stepladder, a drill and anchors suited to your ceiling. The adjustable cord lets you set the height: at the bedside, place the bottom of the globe about 20 to 24 in (50 to 60 cm) above the top. Some assembly is required before mounting.
Care
Turn off the power and let the bulb cool. Wipe the globe with a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with water and a drop of white vinegar, then dry it without streaks. Dust the brass-look base with a dry cloth, with no abrasive product that could dull the finish.

Our nightstands are tiny, so we hung a pair of these either side of the bed instead of table lamps. The smoked glass makes the light soft and moody, perfect for winding down. I used warm filament bulbs, which look lovely through the grey globe. Our electrician set them about 55 cm above the tops with the adjustable cord. Now there's room for books again.

Moody and lovely
Really nice lamp. The smoked glass and brass-look base look smart in our dark blue bedroom and the warm filament bulb glows beautifully through the globe. One star off because we had to get an electrician in to add a ceiling point above the bed, which added cost and time. Not the lamp's fault, just worth planning for. The adjustable cord made setting the height easy.Smoked gray glass

Thanks Jose, that's a helpful tip for anyone without a ceiling point above the bed. Glad it's glowing nicely in your blue bedroom.

I've wanted hanging bedside lights for years after seeing them in a boutique hotel, and finally did it when we redecorated our bedroom in a deep sage green. These smoked glass globes are gorgeous against the dark wall. You can see the filament bulb inside, like a little ember, and the gray glass softens the light so it never feels harsh. The gold brass-look base adds a warm detail to all the gray and green. We hung one on each side of the bed at the same height for symmetry. They needed a bit of assembly and our electrician wired them to the ceiling boxes, then adjusted the cord to sit about 50 cm above each nightstand. I chose 2200K filament bulbs, very warm and cosy, and they're still enough for me to read a few pages before sleep. My nightstand is now completely clear apart from a glass of water and my book. Really happy with them.
