Floor Lamps

Light at human height, linking the ceiling and the floor.

A floor lamp bridges the ceiling and the low lamps in a living room: it lights a reading corner, highlights a corner or stands in for a missing ceiling light. Our selection brings together six silhouettes. The designer metal arc floor lamp carries light above a coffee table without drilling the ceiling. The LED torchiere, with adjustable brightness and color, lights toward the ceiling for strong indirect light, and the gooseneck reading lamp aims its beam at the book. The Scandinavian wood tripod warms a corner, the hand-woven rattan brings a boho note, and the 63 in (160 cm) opal glass globe spreads a soft light. To complete the room, see our table lamps, mushroom lamps or ceiling lights.

Four floor lamp families, four uses

The arc moves the light source far from its base. It replaces a pendant above a coffee table or a small dining table, with no electrical work.

The torchiere, also called an uplighter, sends light upward. The ceiling bounces it around the whole room: the solution for a living room with no central light point.

The tripod, with its shade, lights the area around it. It dresses a corner and sits behind an armchair.

The opal glass globe gives ambient light without glare. It works as much as an object as a light.

Height and placement

Type Where to place it Guide
Arc Behind or beside the sofa Head 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) above the coffee table, at least 79 in (2 m) of clearance under the arc
Torchiere In a corner 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) from the walls, light-colored ceiling
Tripod Beside an armchair, in a corner Bottom of the shade at about 47 to 55 in (120 to 140 cm) from the floor
Opal globe Near a sofa or console Leave space around the silhouette

For a reading corner, place the lamp slightly behind the armchair, on the side opposite the hand that turns the pages. For an arc floor lamp, measure its reach: the head should fall at the center of the coffee table, and the base must not block the way.

How much light for a living room

For general ambient light in a living room, count about 10 to 14 lumens per square foot (100 to 150 per square meter), spread across several sources. A powerful LED torchiere aimed at the ceiling can provide most of that light on its own in a medium-sized room, as long as the ceiling is light in color, since a dark ceiling absorbs light. Its dimming function takes you from bright light to a night light. For ambient light, choose 2700 K, a warm and restful tone. A reading lamp needs a more focused beam, aimed at the book.

The right floor lamp for the room

In a living room, a designer floor lamp goes next to the sofa to create evening light with the ceiling off. In a dining room, the arc replaces a pendant above a round table when the ceiling box is not centered. In a bedroom, a tripod beside an armchair makes a reading corner. In a spacious entryway, an opal glass globe floor lamp welcomes you with a soft light. For a Japandi interior, the wood of the tripod pairs with linen and ceramics. For a modern floor lamp in a clean-lined living room, the metal arc adds a graphic curve.

Stability, cord and care

An arc floor lamp rests on a heavy base that balances its reach: never move it by pulling on the arc, and check that it sits flat. A tripod standing lamp needs all three legs on the floor, away from foot traffic. Run the cord along a wall or under a thin rug, without pinching it, to avoid tripping. In a home with young children or a pet, choose a corner spot. For care, unplug the lamp and dust it with a dry cloth. Check the bulb base and maximum wattage before changing a bulb.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01How tall should a living room floor lamp be?
Most floor lamps measure 59 to 75 in (150 to 190 cm). For a reading corner, the bottom of the shade sits at about 47 to 55 in (120 to 140 cm) from the floor, at seated shoulder height. An arc lamp needs at least 79 in (2 m) of clearance under its curve.
02Can a floor lamp replace a ceiling light?
Yes, a powerful LED torchiere aimed at the ceiling can provide the main light in a medium-sized room, as long as the ceiling is light in color. Its dimming function then lets you adjust the brightness to the moment.
03Where should an arc floor lamp go in a living room?
Place its base behind or beside the sofa, and set the head so it falls at the center of the coffee table, 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) above it. Check that the base does not block the way.
04What color temperature for a floor lamp?
A warm 2700 K light suits the living room and bedroom, for a restful evening mood. Keep the same temperature as the other lamps in the room for an even light.
05How do I keep an arc floor lamp stable?
Stand it on a level floor, base sitting flat, and never move it by pulling on the arc. Avoid thick rugs under the base, which make it unstable. With children or a pet, put it in a quiet corner.
