What size mirror do you need?
The most reliable rule: above a piece of furniture, a mirror should cover two thirds to three quarters of its width. Narrower, it looks lost; as wide or wider, it overwhelms the furniture. On a bare wall, work from eye level: the center of the glass sits 59 to 63 in (150 to 160 cm) from the floor.
| Furniture | Furniture width | Recommended mirror |
|---|---|---|
| Powder room sink | 16 to 20 in (40 to 50 cm) | 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) round |
| Bathroom vanity | 24 to 31 in (60 to 80 cm) | 20 to 31 in (50 to 80 cm) wide |
| Entryway console | 39 to 47 in (100 to 120 cm) | 28 to 35 in (70 to 90 cm) wide |
| Sideboard, dresser | 63 to 71 in (160 to 180 cm) | 39 to 47 in (100 to 120 cm) wide |
| Full length view | - | at least 59 in (150 cm) tall |
Above furniture, leave 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the frame: enough room for a lamp, close enough that both read as one composition.
