Bedside Lamps

The last light of the evening deserves as much care as the first.

A bedside lamp is the most personal light in the home: the one you switch on to read and switch off last. Our selection plays on materials, with rattan, ceramic, wood and glass, including a 70s-style orange glass lamp, and on use: the rechargeable touch lamp, the cordless LED lamp, the clip-on lamp that attaches to the headboard, the swing arm lamp, the hanging bedside lamp, the smart RGB lamp and the lamp with a wireless phone charger. To free up the nightstand, also consider our wall sconces and reading lights. For a round, soft silhouette, see our mushroom lamps.

What size bedside lamp for your nightstand

The right bedside lamp is measured sitting up in bed. The bottom of the shade should reach roughly shoulder height, so the light falls on the book without glare. With a 20 to 24 in (50 to 60 cm) nightstand and a mattress at a similar height, a 16 to 22 in (40 to 55 cm) lamp works. The shade should not be wider than the top, and at least 4 in (10 cm) of free surface should remain for a glass, a book or a phone. On a narrow table, small bedside lamps of 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) are enough, while a tall bedside lamp, over 24 in (60 cm), needs a wide top.

Nightstand Suggested lamp height Maximum shade diameter
Small, 14 to 16 in (35 to 40 cm) wide 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) 10 in (25 cm)
Standard, 18 to 20 in (45 to 50 cm) wide 16 to 22 in (40 to 55 cm) 12 to 14 in (30 to 35 cm)
Wide, 24 in (60 cm) and up 20 to 26 in (50 to 65 cm) 16 in (40 cm)

One light for reading, another for falling asleep

Bedside reading lamps should give about 250 to 450 lumens, in warm 2700 K light, which tires the eyes less in the evening. When it is time to sleep, you need far less. That is the advantage of a dimmable bedside lamp: brightest for reading, lowest as a night light. A fabric shade or opaque ceramic directs the light downward and shields the person sleeping next to you, while rattan spreads a wider ambient light, to pair with a reading light if you read a lot.

Cordless, touch or clip-on: choosing for your bedroom

A cordless rechargeable LED lamp goes wherever you want, with no cable hanging behind the table. It also moves from the nightstand to the balcony table. The clip-on LED lamp, a truly adjustable bedside light, clips to a headboard, a shelf or the edge of a loft bed and frees the nightstand entirely: a real plus in a small bedroom or a child's room. Corded bedside table lamps in ceramic, wood or glass give steady light, with no recharging, and a more generous shade.

Materials and styles for bedroom table lamps

Rattan brings a boho note and casts patterns on the wall. Ceramic, matte or glazed, acts as a decorative object and suits bedrooms in sand or terracotta tones. Natural wood suits japandi and Scandinavian interiors, with linen bedding. A 70s vintage silhouette adds a color or a curve to a plain bedroom. In a primary bedroom, a pair of matching lamps on each side of the bed creates a calming symmetry. In a teen's room, a more unusual model can stand out from the rest instead.

Safety and care

Keep the cord out of the way and away from the bed legs. With a fabric or natural-fiber shade, use an LED bulb that runs cool, without exceeding the maximum wattage on the product page, and check the socket before you buy. For a rechargeable lamp, use the cable provided and do not leave it charging under a duvet or a cushion. Dust rattan with a paintbrush, ceramic and wood with a dry cloth, with the lamp off and unplugged.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01How tall should a bedside lamp be?
For a standard nightstand of 20 to 24 in (50 to 60 cm), choose a lamp of 16 to 22 in (40 to 55 cm). Sitting up in bed, the bottom of the shade should reach your shoulders: the light falls on the book without dazzling you.
02How many lumens for a bedside lamp?
For reading, allow 250 to 450 lumens in warm 2700 K light. For a simple night light, a few dozen lumens are enough. A lamp with several brightness levels lets you switch from one to the other.
03Is a cordless bedside lamp practical every day?
Yes, if you are happy to recharge it regularly. It removes the cord behind the nightstand and can move to a patio or a shelf. Battery life depends on the brightness chosen: the product page gives the details.
04What lamp for a bedroom with no nightstand?
A clip-on LED lamp attaches to the headboard or a shelf. A wall sconce or a reading light are other options, mounted 24 to 31 in (60 to 80 cm) above the mattress to light your reading well.
05Do bedside lamps need to match?
In a primary bedroom, a matching pair creates a restful symmetry. It is not a rule: two different lamps of the same height and the same light color still look harmonious.
