Ceiling Lights

All the light a room needs, without taking any of its height.

A ceiling light lights the whole room while staying flush with the ceiling: the ideal solution when height is short or people walk under the fixture. Our selection includes six. The hand-woven rattan ceiling light and the straw and jute one give a soft, warm light; the ultra-flat 16 in (40 cm) solid wood LED model warms a bedroom; the vintage gray smoked glass softens the light; the black ceiling light with 1 to 3 GU10 spotlights directs it, studio style; and the LED ceiling light with 4 black rings, dimmable by remote, draws a contemporary graphic line. For a higher ceiling, see our pendant lights and chandeliers. To complete the evening light, add wall sconces.

Flush mount ceiling light or pendant: how to decide

A flush mount ceiling light is the obvious choice under 8 ft 2 in (2.5 m), in rooms people walk through and anywhere a pendant would be in the line of sight: entryway, hallway, low bedroom, open kitchen. It lights more evenly, because the light starts at the ceiling and bounces off it. A pendant remains preferable above a table or an island, where you want to bring the light closer to the surface. In a combined living and dining room, the two pair well: a ceiling light in the center of the living area, a pendant above the table.

What size ceiling light fixture to choose

For a room of ordinary shape, add its length and width in feet and take that number, or a little less, in inches: you get an indicative diameter. A 24 in (60 cm) modern ceiling light suits a living room of about 215 sq ft (20 m²), a 16 in (40 cm) a bedroom, a 12 in (30 cm) an entryway or hallway. In a large room, two well-spaced medium ceiling lights are better than one that is too big.

Room Recommended diameter Indicative light output
Entryway, hallway 12 in (30 cm) 600 to 1,000 lumens
Bedroom of 108 to 150 sq ft (10 to 14 m²) 16 in (40 cm) 1,000 to 1,800 lumens
Living room of 215 sq ft (20 m²) 24 in (60 cm) 2,000 to 3,000 lumens
Living room of 320 sq ft (30 m²) and more Two ceiling lights, or 24 in (60 cm) plus extra lamps 3,000 lumens and more

Integrated LED or bulb: reading the product page

The LED ring ceiling light has a built-in light source: it lists its output in lumens and its color temperature in kelvins directly. It is a practical choice in a living room, where it provides plenty of light right away. The rattan, straw, glass and spotlight models take a bulb: check the bulb base and maximum wattage on the product page. Under a rattan shade, an LED bulb is better because it stays cool. For color, 2700 K suits the living room and bedroom, 3000 to 4000 K the kitchen. To use a dimmer, make sure the ceiling light or bulb is compatible.

The right ceiling lamp for each room

Living room. The 4-ring LED ceiling light, dimmable by remote, provides the main light. In the evening, switch it off in favor of low lamps for a more intimate mood.

Dining room. A ceiling light works over a dining table if the ceiling is low or the table moves around. Choose smoked glass, which diffuses without glare.

Entryway. The model with adjustable GU10 spotlights welcomes you with crisp light that highlights a mirror facing the door.

Bedroom. Rattan softens the light and draws gentle shadows on the ceiling. The ultra-flat solid wood model, in warm light, creates a cozy atmosphere under a low ceiling.

Bathroom. Only a model with a protection rating suited to the zone can be installed there. Check the product page and the rules for your installation.

Installation and care

Switch off the power at the breaker before any work. A ceiling light mounts directly to the ceiling: on drywall, use anchors suited to the stated weight. If you are unsure about the wiring, call an electrician. For care, dust rattan with a brush, clean glass with a slightly damp cloth once removed, and wipe the LED ceiling light with a dry cloth, light off.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Sizes, hanging heights, light, shipping: answers to the questions we hear most.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01What size ceiling light for a 215 sq ft (20 m²) living room?
A ceiling light about 24 in (60 cm) in diameter, with an output of 2,000 to 3,000 lumens, suits a 215 sq ft (20 m²) living room. Add one or two extra lamps to adjust the light in the evening.
02Ceiling light or pendant for a low ceiling?
Below about 8 ft 2 in (2.5 m), a close to ceiling light is the most comfortable choice where people walk: it does not reduce headroom. A pendant is still possible over a table or island, where no one walks underneath.
03Can I replace the LED in an integrated LED ceiling light?
On an integrated LED ceiling light, the light source is part of the fixture and is generally not designed to be replaced by the user. LEDs have a long lifespan. See the product page for details.
04What color temperature for a bedroom ceiling light?
A warm 2700 K light is the most restful in a bedroom. Avoid tones above 4000 K, cooler and better suited to a kitchen or workspace.
05Can I install a rattan ceiling light in a kitchen?
Yes, away from the cooktop, because rattan holds on to grease and steam. Dust it regularly with a brush. Above the cooking area, a glass ceiling light is easier to clean.
