Mirror above couch or artwork? On what is often the largest blank wall in the living room, and the first one you see when you walk in, a mirror does more than a painting: it brightens the room, adds depth and balances the bulk of the sofa. It still has to be at the right scale.

This guide gives the proportions, the hanging height and the shapes that work with your sofa, then the other places a mirror earns its keep in the living room and the dining room.

At a glance

Above a couch, choose a mirror about two thirds as wide as the sofa: 51 to 59 in (130 to 150 cm) for an 83 in (210 cm) three-seater. Leave 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) between the sofa back and the bottom of the mirror, center it on the seat and mount it with two screwed anchor points.

The two-thirds rule for a mirror above couch backs

The mirror, or group of mirrors, should cover about two thirds of the sofa width. Under half, it looks lost on the wall. Over three quarters, it crushes the sofa and reads as one heavy block. The height then depends on the ceiling: under about 8 ft (2.5 m), a mirror 24 to 35 in (60 to 90 cm) tall lets the wall breathe.

Sofa width Mirror width (or group) Suggested height
63 in (160 cm, loveseat) 39 to 43 in (100 to 110 cm) 24 to 31 in (60 to 80 cm)
71 in (180 cm) 45 to 49 in (115 to 125 cm) 24 to 35 in (60 to 90 cm)
83 in (210 cm, three-seater) 51 to 59 in (130 to 150 cm) 28 to 35 in (70 to 90 cm)
94 in (240 cm) 61 to 67 in (155 to 170 cm) 28 to 39 in (70 to 100 cm)
110 in (280 cm) and up 71 to 79 in (180 to 200 cm), or two mirrors 31 to 39 in (80 to 100 cm)

For a round mirror, think in diameter: a 31 to 39 in (80 to 100 cm) round suits a 71 to 83 in (180 to 210 cm) sofa. Beyond that, a single round looks small and a group of two or three takes over. For a large mirror above couch spans of 8 ft or more, a long horizontal rectangle or a pair is the cleaner answer.

Measure and test before you drill

Measure the sofa from arm to arm, not just the seat. Note the height of the back, then the ceiling height. Cut a template to the mirror's size from kraft paper, or outline it on the wall with painter's tape, and leave it up for a day or two. Sit down, walk past, look at it from the doorway. It is the most reliable way to confirm the size, because a mirror always looks smaller on the wall than in the store. During this test, check what it will reflect from where you usually sit: a window or a pendant light is a win; a TV screen or a cluttered corner means you should shift it.

How high to hang a mirror above the sofa

The bottom of the mirror goes 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) above the sofa back. Any closer and you bump it with your head as you sit, and it looks like it is resting on the cushions. Any higher and it drifts away from the sofa and no longer forms a set with it. With a standard 31 to 35 in (80 to 90 cm) sofa back, the bottom of the mirror lands between 39 and 47 in (100 and 120 cm) from the floor.

Then check the center: a 31 in (80 cm) tall mirror hung at 43 in (110 cm) has its center at about 59 in (150 cm), within the usual eye-level zone of 59 to 63 in (150 to 160 cm). If your sofa is very low, lounge style, keep the 8 to 12 in gap and accept a slightly lower center: the relationship with the sofa comes first.

Mirror over couch ideas by sofa shape

Straight sofa with clean lines

A rectangle mirror hung horizontally extends the lines of the sofa. For a softer interior, a rectangle with rounded corners keeps the structure without the stiffness.

Curved or bouclé sofa

Curves call for curves. A round mirror or a wavy, organic mirror answers a sofa with rounded arms and softens the whole look.

Sectional sofa

Center the mirror on the longest section, not on the corner. Measure that section alone to apply the two-thirds rule.

High ceilings

Above about 9 ft (2.7 m), two vertical 20 × 39 in (50 × 100 cm) arched mirrors spaced 4 to 6 in (10 to 15 cm) apart fill the height and give the living room the feel of an older apartment.

Over the couch mirror ideas with two or three mirrors

A pair or a trio works when the mirrors are identical or clearly from the same family. Count the total width, gaps included, to stay within two thirds. Keep 3 to 5 in (8 to 12 cm) between two mirrors: less and they visually touch, more and they drift apart. Always align the top edges, or the centers if the heights differ. For a free-form group (mixed sizes and shapes), the gallery wall rules apply: a rectangular zone, a constant gap, a kraft-paper trial before drilling.

Mirror above sofa and beyond: the rest of the living room

  • Above the fireplace: as wide as the mantel or a little narrower, with the bottom 4 to 8 in (10 to 20 cm) above the shelf. A mirror simply leaned on the mantel against the wall feels more relaxed.
  • Above a console: 31 to 39 in (80 to 100 cm) wide for a 47 in (120 cm) piece, with the bottom 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) above it.
  • Facing or beside the window: this is where it opens up the room most. On a perpendicular wall, it spreads light toward the back of the living room.

A thin gold metal frame warms a living room in sand tones and adds a touch of light even in shade: see our gold mirrors.

The mirror in the dining room

In the dining room, the mirror usually hangs above the sideboard or buffet. The rule stays the same: two thirds to three quarters of the furniture width, and 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) between the top and the bottom of the mirror. A 71 in (180 cm) sideboard takes a mirror 47 to 53 in (120 to 135 cm) wide.

Think about seated height. A seated guest's eyes are around 45 to 47 in (115 to 120 cm) from the floor. A mirror that starts near 39 in (100 cm) reflects the room and the light rather than everyone's face for the whole meal. It comes into its own in the evening, when it reflects a lit pendant light above the table: the light is doubled and the room gains depth.

Mounting: a mirror above a seat

A 55 × 31 in (140 × 80 cm) mirror in 4 mm glass weighs about 24 lb (11 kg) without its frame, often 33 lb (15 kg) with it. Above a sofa, where people lean back and drop into the seat, the mounting has to be flawless:

  • two screwed anchor points, or a beveled French cleat for large sizes;
  • anchors suited to the wall: expansion anchors for drywall, specific anchors for hollow brick;
  • a load rating well above the real weight;
  • a check for cables before drilling, avoiding the areas directly above outlets and switches.

Never rest a large mirror on the sofa back against the wall: it slides at the first movement.

Frequently asked questions

What size mirror should go above a couch?
About two thirds of the sofa width: 39 to 43 in (100 to 110 cm) for a 63 in (160 cm) loveseat, 51 to 59 in (130 to 150 cm) for an 83 in (210 cm) three-seater.
How high should a mirror be hung above a couch?
Leave 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the mirror. With a 31 to 35 in (80 to 90 cm) back, the bottom of the mirror lands 39 to 47 in (100 to 120 cm) from the floor.
Round or rectangular mirror above the sofa?
Rectangular and horizontal for a straight sofa with clean lines, round or organic for a sofa with curved shapes. A 31 to 39 in (80 to 100 cm) round suits a 71 to 83 in (180 to 210 cm) sofa.
Where should a mirror go in the dining room?
Above the sideboard or buffet, across two thirds to three quarters of its width, with 6 to 10 in (15 to 25 cm) of space. Ideally it reflects the pendant light above the table.
Can you lean a mirror on the back of the couch?
Not a large one: it slides as soon as someone leans back. Mount it on the wall with two screwed anchor points and anchors suited to the wall.
