Design and materials of the ceramic table lamp

The base is white ceramic: a dense material that gives the lamp weight and takes on a light satin sheen under the light. The pleated fabric shade adds texture and softens the silhouette. This white-on-white pair stays bright even when off and leaves room for the other materials on the nightstand: blond wood, linen, glass or stoneware. To warm things up, add a walnut tray or a stack of books with colorful spines. The discreet rotary switch completes a soft, retro look that makes this pleated lamp easy to live with.

The light

The lamp takes an E27 base bulb, not included. Choose a low-wattage LED, within the 0 to 5 W range indicated, and a warm color temperature around 2700 K: through the pleated fabric, it gives a golden light that eases you toward sleep. The brightness is not adjustable; for a softer effect, pick a bulb with a modest output or an opal bulb that hides the bright point. Light comes out of both the top and the bottom of the shade.

Where to put it

In a main bedroom, use two as ceramic bedside lamps, one on each side of the bed, for a restful symmetry on 16 to 20 in (40 to 50 cm) nightstands. In a guest room, a single lamp on a dresser next to a mirror is enough to make the room welcoming. It arrives in a 14 × 8 × 6 in (35 × 20 × 15 cm) box weighing 2.1 lb (0.95 kg) with packaging: an accent lamp at nightstand scale, weighted enough by its ceramic to stay stable. No installation is needed: screw in an E27 bulb, plug the lamp into a wall outlet and set the shade straight. Ideally, the bottom of the shade sits at shoulder height when you are sitting up in bed. If your nightstand is low, set the lamp on two handsome books to gain a little height.

Care

Unplug the lamp and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Wipe the ceramic base with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then a dry one. Dust the pleated shade with a soft-bristled brush or the vacuum's brush attachment, following the direction of the pleats. Do not get the fabric wet.

  1. I'd been looking for a pleated lamp for my bedroom for months, after seeing them all over interior accounts, and this one is just what I wanted. The base is smooth white ceramic with a soft sheen, heavy enough that it doesn't wobble when I reach over to switch it off, and the pleated fabric shade gives it a gentle texture. It arrives without a bulb, so I bought a warm 2700K LED as the description suggests, and the light through the fabric is a lovely golden glow, with a soft pool on the nightstand from the bottom and a little on the wall from the top. It's not meant to light the whole room and I don't want it to, it's for winding down. My nightstand is low, so I put it on two books to raise it, and now the bottom of the shade is just at shoulder height when I sit up to read. Love the rotary switch too. Really pretty in my white and pale wood bedroom.

    This is the lamp I switch on when I get into bed and turn off with the knob as I fall asleep. The ceramic base is solid and the pleated shade softens the light beautifully. I used an opal LED bulb as recommended and you can't see any bright point through the fabric, just a warm glow. Lovely next to my linen bedding.
