Description
This black swing arm lamp stands out for its jointed arm, which pivots and folds to aim the light at your book. The beam stays focused on the page, without dazzling the person asleep next to you. Its graphic lines recall workshop lamps, in a size made for the nightstand. It is made for evening readers, shared bedrooms and anyone who wants a lamp as useful as it is good-looking, which also works on a desk.
Design and materials of the swing arm lamp
The whole design lives in the arm: jointed segments that fold back against the stem when you are not reading, and extend over the pillow when you open a book. The black finish draws a crisp line that works with dark wood as well as light oak, white linen as well as velvet. This swing arm bedside lamp keeps the practical spirit of task lamps without their stiffness. It suits an upholstered headboard, a floating nightstand or a small round table, and holds its place on a desk during the day.
The light
The arm lets you focus the beam exactly where you need it. For reading in bed, choose a warm white bulb, around 2700 to 3000 K: it is easy on the eyes and helps you wind down. On a desk, a more neutral tone, around 4000 K, helps you concentrate. Point the head at the page, not at your face, to avoid glare.
Where to put this swing arm table lamp
In a shared bedroom, put one on each side of the bed: each person reads at their own pace, under a beam that stays in its lane. In a reading nook, set it on a small table next to an armchair, arm turned toward the seat. On a desk, it lights the keyboard or a notebook. For reading in bed, this is the bedside lamp to choose. Size and installation
- Power: 220 V mains, European plug.
- Arm: jointed and adjustable.
Set the lamp on the nightstand, on the side away from the wall if possible, and plug it into a 220 V outlet. Then adjust the arm so the head sits slightly behind your shoulder, 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) above the book: the light falls on the page with no shadow from your hand. Run the cord behind the nightstand so it does not trail.
Care
Unplug the lamp before cleaning. Dust the stem and arm with a dry microfiber cloth. For a mark, a barely damp cloth is enough. Move the arm by its joints, without forcing it past its range, so it keeps its adjustment over time.

Fits my tiny nightstand
My nightstand is really small and most lamps hog the whole surface. This one leaves room for my book and glasses, and the arm does the reaching. Great buy.Black

lovely reading lamp
got this for my reading corner, its on a small round table beside my armchair and i turn the arm towards the seat. the light falls right on my book and not in my eyes which is all i wanted really. it looks nice and simple in black, goes with my bookshelf. no assembly, just plugged it inBlack

The arm is the best part. Folded back it looks neat and tidy on my bedside, then I swing it out when I open my book. Black goes with everything in our room.

I'm in my seventies and do a lot of crosswords in bed. Being able to bring the light right down to the page is wonderful for my eyes. Easy to adjust too.

Thank you, Ingrid, that's exactly what the arm is for. Happy puzzling!

Workshop look, bedroom size
I liked the look of those industrial task lamps but they're always too big for a nightstand. This has that same jointed arm style in a much more sensible size. It sits nicely next to my bed with room for a glass of water and my phone, and the arm reaches over to my pillow when I read. The black matches my picture frames.Black

My girlfriend and I have opposite schedules, she's up at five and I read late. Before this lamp there was a lot of grumbling. Now I pull the arm over my side and keep the beam on my book, and she sleeps fine. Took two minutes to set up, just plug in and adjust. Worth every penny.

The lamp is nice, no problems there at all. Smart black finish and the arm adjusts easily to point the light at my book. My three stars are about the order. Tracking showed nothing for over a week and I had to contact the shop twice. It got here in the end, well packed, but it took the shine off a bit. I'm keeping it and I do use it every night.

Using it on my desk for late work, it aims exactly where I need.

Plugged in and ready in seconds. Arm angles perfectly over my book.

My partner reads until midnight and I'm asleep by ten. With the arm pulled over his pillow the light stays on his book and I barely notice it. Peace restored in our bedroom.

looks great on my floating nightstand, arm folds away nicely when not in use.

Lovely lamp and does the job beautifully next to my bed. I'd have liked a white or cream option for my very light bedroom, but the black looks smart enough.

Nice lamp. Box arrived crushed, lamp ok. Slow delivery too.

Opalyne replied
Sorry about the crushed box and the wait, that's not the start we want for anyone. Glad the lamp itself made it through fine.

black finish looks smart next to our dark wood headboard.

I'm a student living in a shared house, so my room is bedroom, office and living room all in one. I needed one lamp that could handle all of it and this is perfect. In the day it sits on my desk with the arm stretched out over my laptop and notes, and I use a more neutral bulb like the description suggests for studying. In the evening I move it to the little table by my bed, fold the arm down a bit and read before sleeping. It's easy to carry between the two and doesn't tip over. The black looks really neat and grown-up compared to the plastic lamp I had before. My housemates have all asked where I got it. Definately one of the best things I've bought for uni.

Two of them in our bedroom
we've got a fairly small bedroom with floating shelves as nightstands, so we needed something that wouldn't take up much room or swamp the space. Two of these turned out to be ideal. During the day the arms fold back against the stems and they look like tidy little sculptures. At night we each swing ours out over our own pillow, and because the light is aimed, my partner can read his thriller while I go to sleep without a lamp shining in my face. I followed the tip in the description and set the head slightly behind my shoulder, around 35 cm above the book, and there's no shadow from my hand at all. I went with warm white bulbs and the light is easy on the eyes. The black finish looks great with our white walls and oak floor. Cords run down the back of the shelves so nothing trails. realy pleasedBlack

Reading in bed again
id stopped reading at night because the old lamp lit up the whole room and woke my partner. This one points just at the page. Back to a chapter a night!Black

Got two, one each side of the bed. My wife reads, I scroll on my phone, and neither of us is blinding the other anymore. Arm is easy to adjust.

bedside reading sorted
bought this for my side of the bed bc my boyfriend complained my old lamp was too bright. now i just swing the arm over my book and he can sleep. i put a warm bulb in it like they suggest and its really soft and nice to read by. the black looks good with our gray bedding too. honestly wish i'd got it years agoBlack

Good for night owls
I'm a night owl and my partner is an early riser, so reading in bed has always been a sore point. The lamp before this had a wide shade and the light went everywhere. With this one I can tuck the head behind my shoulder and the light only goes on my page. The black finish is crisp and goes with both our dark wood furniture and white bedding. Very practical and good looking.Black

Bit torn on the rating. The lamp is well made and the arm is lovely to adjust, folding and pivoting without any wobble. My issue is that I'd pictured it a lot bigger, more like a proper reading lamp for a big room, and on my wide chest of drawers it looks a bit lost. That's partly my fault, it does say it's sized for a nightstand. It now lives on my desk where it looks right.

Opalyne replied
Thanks for the honest feedback, Emma. It's designed at nightstand scale, so we're glad it found the right spot on your desk.

Lamp itself is good, I'll say that up front. Arm moves smoothly, the black looks sharp on my desk and it throws light right where I'm working. The three stars are for the delivery. It came almost two weeks late, and the box looked like it had been dropped a few times. Luckily the lamp was fine inside. If it had turned up on time it'd be an easy five.

Bought two for the guest room so visitors can read in bed. They look very smart either side of the headboard and my sister, who stayed recently, said it was the best reading light shes had in ages.

Bought for my daughter's room for revision. She uses it on her desk in the day and moves it to her bedside at night lol. Very sturdy arm, stays put.

My studio apartment has the desk right next to the bed. One lamp does both jobs, I just swing the arm around. Good value.

Use it on my home office desk. The arm reaches over the keyboard and I point it at my notebook when I'm writing. Neat, compact, black. Exactly what I needed.

Bought one for my reading nook, now ordering another for my desk :)

I wanted something for the reading chair in our living room and this does the job nicely. The arm swings round so the light lands on the page over my shoulder, just like the listing describes, and I put a warm bulb in so it's cosy in the evening. Four stars only because I'd have loved this in white to match the rest of the room. The black is smart, it just stands out more than I planned!!

Opalyne replied
Thank you for the lovely review. We'll pass on the wish for a white version, and we're glad the reading chair has its light sorted.

Gave this to my dad, who reads every night and kept complaining about straining his eyes under the ceiling light. He's thrilled. He has it on his nightstand with the arm pulled close to his book, and he says he can finally read the small print in his history books without squinting. It's also pretty sturdy for someone who isn't gentle with things!

Opalyne replied
What a thoughtful present, and we're delighted your dad is enjoying his history books again.

Bought as a Christmas gift for my mom, she loves it.

bought it to go on my desk for video calls and late emails, ended up moving it to the bed room because I liked it so much. The arm pivots right over the page, the black finish looks sharp, and with a warm bulb the light is gentle at night. I'm getting a second one for the desk now.

realy handy lamp and it looks great on my nightstand. The jointed arm moves easily and stays where you put it, so I can angle the light right onto my book. I knocked a star off because delivery took over a week longer than the estimate and I had to email to find out where it was. Customer service did reply quickly though, and the lamp arrived well packed

Opalyne replied
Thanks for your patience with the delivery, Parker, and for the kind words about the team. Happy reading under the new lamp!

I sit in an armchair in the corner to read and this sits on the side table with the arm turned toward me. Light on the page, no glare in my eyes. Simple and works.
