Description
This vintage smoked glass ceiling light in gray reinterprets the fixtures of old apartment lobbies and period homes, in a pared-back, Nordic-inspired version. Mounted on the ceiling or the wall, it softens the light through its tinted glass and gives a gentle glow, both up and down. It suits entryways, hallways and bedrooms where a stark white ceiling light would feel cold. It is for people who love retro charm without pastiche, and materials that change with the light.
Design & materials of a vintage glass flush mount ceiling light
The gray smoked glass is hot-formed, which gives it even curves and a deep tint, stronger where the glass is thicker. Lit, it tones down the glare of the bulb and takes on a muted gray hue. This grey glass ceiling light suits herringbone floors, off-white walls, moldings and doors painted dark green or midnight blue. It adds a touch of character without dominating the room. For a consistent look, pair it with brushed brass, walnut or cement tile.
The light
The bulb is not included. Choose an LED bulb: it runs cool, which is kind to the glass. In an entryway or hallway, 2700 to 3000 K gives a welcoming light; in a bedroom, stay around 2700 K. Smoked glass absorbs part of the light: pick a slightly brighter bulb than you would for a clear globe. The light goes up and down and covers 55 to 110 sq ft (5 to 10 m²). The fixture is not dimmable.
Where to put a smoked glass ceiling light
In an entryway, mount it in the center of the ceiling, above a mirror and a console: the smoked glass echoes the reflection. In a long hallway, line up two or three every 6.5 to 10 ft (2 to 3 m) for a steady rhythm. In a bedroom, this smoked glass flush mount ceiling light replaces a white fixture and warms the atmosphere, especially with linen and dark wood. On the wall, as a pair on either side of a door, it makes a handsome entrance. For other models, browse our ceiling lights.

Size & installation
It mounts on the ceiling or the wall, on an existing junction box. The package measures 12 × 12 × 8 in (30 × 30 × 21 cm) and weighs 2.7 lb (1.22 kg) including packaging: a modest load, but a solid mounting surface is still essential, especially on drywall. Switch off the breaker before any work, and have an electrician make the connection if you are not comfortable. You will need a drill, anchors suited to the surface, a screwdriver and a sturdy step ladder. On a wall, mount it around 6 to 6.5 ft (1.80 to 2 m) from the floor, above eye level, where it works as a smoked glass wall light.
Care
Switch off the power and let the bulb cool before cleaning. If you take the glass down, do it carefully and wash it in warm soapy water, then dry it with a microfiber cloth to avoid streaks. Avoid scouring pads. Refit it only once it is completely dry.

Retro done right
Gives our hallway character without feeling old fashioned. Soft light, lovely glass!!Smoked gray, no bulb

We have a small bedroom, maybe 9 square metres, painted off-white with dark wood furniture and a navy headboard. The original ceiling light was a white plastic dome that made the room feel like a doctor's waiting room. I wanted something with more personality but not fussy, and this smoked grey glass light was the answer. The glass is hot-formed and has a smooth, even curve, and the tint is deeper at the thicker parts, which gives it a subtle shading. When it's off it looks like a piece of vintage glass on the ceiling; when it's on, it glows a soft grey and throws light both up and down. We picked a 2700K LED bulb, slightly brighter than we'd use under clear glass, and the room has a warm, calm feeling now. Our electrician fitted it to the existing box in about twenty minutes. Very pleased with it.

put this on the wall above the bedroom door as a wall light, around 1.8 m high. It casts a lovely glow up and down the wall. Bit unusual but looks great and guests always ask about it

Hallway finally done
Our hallway is long and narrow and had three bare bulbs dangling from the ceiling. We put three of these in, spaced roughly every 2.5 meters as the listing recommends, and now it has a lovely steady rhythm. The smoked gray glass looks like something from an old apartment building lobby. We used 3000K LED bulbs, a bit brighter than we would normally buy because of the tint. The light goes up and down so the ceiling glows too.Smoked gray, no bulb

Perfect for our old house
We're restoring a Victorian terrace and I wanted lighting that felt in keeping. This smoked glass ceiling light is spot on in the landing. The glass has a beautiful depth to it.Smoked gray, no bulb

Mounted two on the wall either side of our front door inside the porch, about 1.9 m up. Looks smart and welcoming when guests arrive. Electrician did both in under an hour.

Beautiful, but think about the bulb
This is a lovely light and I'd recommend it, but there are a few things worth knowing. First, there's no bulb in the box, which is clearly stated, so buy one in advance. Second, smoked glass does absorb some of the light, and again the listing warns you about this, so go a bit brighter than you would normally. I underestimated this at first and our hallway was darker than I wanted, then swapped to a brighter LED and it's perfect now. Third, it's not dimmable, so choose your color temperature carefully; we went with 3000K for the hallway as suggested. The look itself is great. The gray glass is deep and smoky, more so where the glass is thicker, and it gives our Victorian hallway a period feel without looking like a reproduction. Installed on the ceiling by an electrician in under half an hour. It's light enough that the drywall ceiling wasn't an issue with the right anchors.Smoked gray, no bulb

Thank you for such a useful guide for other buyers, Samuel. Choosing the bulb really is half the look with smoked glass, and we're glad your hallway is glowing nicely now.

Sorry about the late, dented parcel, Florence. Relieved the glass came through safely.

We bought our first flat in an old building and the stairwell had these lovely vintage fittings, so I wanted something similar inside. This smoked glass light is the closest I've found, and it was reasonably priced. It's in our entrance hall above the coat rack and makes coming home feel cosy. The tinted glass softens the light really nicely. We chose a 2700K bulb and it's warm and welcoming. Easy job for our electrician.

good light, looks expensive. I'd have liked a bulb in the box though, had to go out and buy one before I could use it. Otherwise very happy with it in the bed room.

Lovely light, plan the install
Good looking fitting with a nice weight to the glass, and the grey tint is exactly what we wanted for our 1930s house. We put it in the entrance hall, centred above the mirror and the console table, and the smoked glass picks up the reflection in the mirror really nicely. I'm giving four stars because the install took more organising than I expected. Our hall ceiling is plasterboard, so I needed the right anchors, plus a proper step ladder as our ceilings are high, and in the end I had an electrician do the connection as I'm not confident with wiring. None of that is the light's fault, and the listing actually tells you what tools you need, I just skimmed it. One tip from me: as it isn't dimmable, choose your bulb carefully. We went with a 2700K LED, slightly brighter than usual because the smoked glass takes some of the light, and the result is warm and welcoming. It's now the first thing people comment on when they come in.Smoked gray, no bulb

Great look, slow post
Love the light. its on the ceiling of our bedroom and the gray glass gives a calm, softened glow that's much nicer than our old white shade. The reason i knocked off a star is the delivery, which took over a week longer than estimated, with tracking that didnt update. When it came the box was well packed and the glass was fine. Our electrician fitted it to the junction box with no problem.Smoked gray, no bulb

id been hunting for a retro ceiling light that didnt feel like a costume. This has real character but stays simple. The smoked glass softens the bulb's glare, no harsh light in the eyes.

Really pretty light and I love the smoky colour of the glass. Four stars because the bulb isn't included and I didn't notice until it arrived, so we had a dark landing for an evening. We went with a warm 2700K LED as recommended. Fitting was easy enough for my dad who's handy, breaker off and done. The glow on the ceiling is soft and lovely.

first i want to say how much i like this light. We live in an Edwardian flat with original mouldings and a herringbone floor, and a plain white cieling light always looked wrong in the entrance. The smoked grey glass suits the building perfectly, it feels old without looking fake. When it's on, the glass glows a soft muted grey and the light spreads both up onto the ceiling and down into the hall. The glass is deeper in tone where it's thicker, which looks lovely. Four stars because i followed the advice to buy a brighter bulb than usual, and still went one step too low the first time, so the hall was a bit moodier than i wanted. The listing does warn you that smoked glass absorbs some light, so that one's on me. Second bulb is perfect. Our electrician connected it to the existing box quickly. Would buy again.
