Description
This up down outdoor wall light frames a door or sets a rhythm along a facade with two opposing beams, one up and one down. Its black stainless steel column is IP65 rated and made to stay outside all year. It suits contemporary houses as well as more classic entrances that want precise, architectural lighting, with no lantern and no ornament. It takes two interchangeable GU10 spotlights, chosen to match the mood you want.
Design and materials
The body is stainless steel, a material that handles moisture and temperature swings well. It is finished in black, a quiet color that stands out on a light render and blends into dark siding. Both openings are closed by a tempered glass diffuser that protects the bulbs and lets a clean beam through. The design is a simple vertical cylinder, with no visible screws and no decoration: an architect's shape that repeats easily along a wall. Among stainless steel outdoor wall lights, this one works as well by a front door as on a gate pillar or a patio wall.
The light
The fixture takes two GU10 bulbs, not included with this version. Choose LED spotlights of 10 W maximum. In warm white, around 2700 to 3000 K, the facade takes on a welcoming tone and stone or wood keep their warmth. A narrow beam angle draws two thin, graphic lines on the wall; a wider angle lights more of the doorstep.
Where to put your outdoor up down lights
At the entrance, a symmetrical pair on either side of the door gives the facade structure and lights the lock. On a patio, line up three every 6.5 to 8 ft (2 to 2.5 m) along the wall: the vertical rhythm of the beams dresses the masonry at night. On gate pillars, they mark the way in without glare and signal the entrance from the street. For other silhouettes, browse our outdoor wall lights.

The light mounts to the wall and connects to the outdoor electrical circuit. This wiring is a job for an electrician, on a line protected by a GFCI/RCD. You will need a drill, masonry anchors and a level. On each side of a door, mount it about 71 in (180 cm) from the ground, 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) from the door frame.
Care
Turn off the power before any cleaning. Wipe the stainless steel and the glass with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry to avoid water spots. Skip abrasive sponges and chlorine-based cleaners, which mark the finish. By the sea, an occasional rinse with clean water limits salt buildup.

Gate pillars done right
We have two brick gate pillars at the end of the drive and wanted to mark the entrance at night without blinding anyone coming up. One of these on each pillar does the job perfectly. The light goes up the pillar and down onto the ground, so you see the entrance clearly from the road but there's no glare. I chose warm white GU10 LEDs under the 10 W limit. The stainless steel body feels solid and the black finish is smart against red brick. im not an electrician so I had one come and wire them on a protected outdoor line, which was the right call with the cable running down the drive. We've had a few storms since and they're carrying on as normal. its a simple, architectural light, nothing fussy, and that's what makes it work. My wife says they make the house look more expensive, which I'll take!Black, no bulb

Love the beams
I'm the type who agonises over every detail of the house, and the outside lights took me weeks to decide. I didn't want lanterns or anything ornate, our house has dark timber cladding and a very simple modern shape. These black up down lights blend into the cladding in the day and at night the two beams look graphic and calm. We fitted a pair either side of the front door and a third by the side door. The bulbs are GU10, two per light and not included, so budget for six spots if you're doing three. I went with warm white LEDs, around 2700K, which keeps the timber looking warm rather than cold. The glass diffusers keep the beams clean. Our electrician installed everything and was impressed with how easy they were to mount. Cleaning is just a damp cloth and a dry one after. Couldn't be more pleased with the facade now.Black, no bulb

Bought a pair for the porch of my mom's bungalow. The beams light the step and the door number nicely, so visitors and deliveries find her easily now. Neat black finish.

Clean black cylinder, two neat beams. Looks great on our white render.

We renovated our 1960s house this year and I wanted outdoor lighting that felt modern but not cold. The two of these by the front door were the last piece of the puzzle. They are a plain black stainless steel cylinder with a glass diffuser at each end, so the light comes out as a clean beam up and a clean beam down. On our light gray render, the black stands out in a nice graphic way. I chose warm white GU10 LEDs, under 10 W, and the light on the wall is welcoming rather than harsh. With a wider beam angle you light more of the doorstep, which was useful for us because we have a step. Our electrician wired them in on the outdoor circuit and mounted them with masonry anchors, level, at about 1.8 meters. They've been out in all weathers and still look as good as day one, I just wipe them occasionally. The lighting is the first thing people mention when they come over in the evening.

Smart front door
Pair of these either side of our front door, about 25 cm from the frame. The up and down beams make the entrance look like an architect designed it. Warm GU10 LEDs bought separately.Black, no bulb

I'm a qualified electrician so I fitted these myself on our facade. Straightforward install with masonry anchors and a level, on a protected outdoor line. Two GU10 lamps per unit, I used 5 W warm white LEDs and that's plenty for a front door. The stainless steel body is solid and the black finish is even. The beams are crisp thanks to the glass. Would happily fit these for customers.

Gorgeous on our patio wall, the beams look so neat at night.

We put three of these along the back wall of the patio, spaced a couple of meters apart. At night the beams make these lovely vertical stripes up and down the brickwork and it looks like a hotel terrace. I chose warm white 2700K LED spots and it keeps the brick feeling cosy. Our electrician wired them all on the outdoor circuit in one afternoon. The black finish is subtle in the daytime.

Nice, but extra costs
Good looking light, solid and modern. Three stars because I had to pay an electrician and buy GU10 bulbs separately, which pushed the cost up more than I'd expected. Looks great now.Black, no bulb

Our house is a fairly plain new build and the front was looking very bare, especially at night when it was basically a dark wall with a door in it. I'd seen up down lights on houses in a nicer part of town and wanted that look. These are a simple black stainless steel cylinder, no visible screws, and the glass at each end protects the bulbs. We mounted one either side of the door at about 1.8 meters, as the listing advises, and roughly 25 cm from the frame. You need two GU10 bulbs per light and they're not in the box, so I bought 3000K LED spots in advance. With a narrow beam they draw two crisp lines on the wall, which is the effect I wanted. Our electrician installed them on a protected circuit and used a level so they're perfectly straight. The difference from the street is huge, the house finally looks finished.

Good light, plan the extras
I want to be fair here because the lights themselves are good. They're solid stainless steel, the black finish is smart, and the up and down beams look great either side of our door. The three stars is about how it all added up. First, the bulbs aren't included, which is clearly stated, but it meant a second order for four GU10 spots before we could use them. Then the wiring. I'd hoped to do it myself, but it needs a properly protected outdoor circuit and I'm not qualified, so we had to wait for an electrician and pay for the visit. Finally, the instructions are very short and our electrician had to work out the best height from the listing. None of that is a problem with the light, so if you're expecting it and budgeting for it, you'll be happy. It does look very sharp now it's up.Black, no bulb

Thank you for such a balanced review, Javier. It's helpful for other buyers to plan for the bulbs and an electrician. We're pleased the pair look sharp by your door.
