Description
This bulkhead light for outdoor walls takes the shape of ship-hold and workshop lamps: an oval ribbed glass diffuser, capped by a hood, held in an anthracite aluminum body. It gives a diffuse, glare-free light and handles moisture thanks to its IP54 rating. On a facade, under a porch, in a garage or a basement, it brings reliable lighting with real character. It will appeal to fans of industrial and nautical style, or to anyone who simply wants a solid outdoor light that never dates.
Design and materials of this oval bulkhead outdoor light
The body is aluminum, a metal that does not rust and stays light on the wall. The ribbed glass spreads the light evenly and protects the bulb. The anthracite finish underlines the oval silhouette and pairs with gray or black window frames, a metal garage door, brick or wood siding. It is a useful object first, but its simple, honest shape also makes it a facade detail. For a coherent look, repeat the same bulkhead wall light along a whole wall.
The light
The light takes an E27 bulb, not included. Choose a compact LED that fits under the diffuser. Outdoors, a 2700 to 3000 K warm white stays welcoming and attracts fewer insects. In a garage, basement or workshop, a 4000 K neutral white helps you work and find things. The ribbed glass softens the source and spreads the light across the whole bulkhead, with no blinding spot.
Where to put a bulkhead outdoor wall light
At the entrance, mount one on each side of the door to frame the doorstep. In a garage, line up two or three above the workbench, about every 5 ft (1.5 m), for even light. In a basement or a storage room, it handles the ambient humidity better than an indoor light. On a garden shed or an outbuilding, it makes the path safer at night and lights the lock. Size and installation
- Mounting: wall.
- Ingress protection: IP54, protected against dust and splashing water.
- Package weight: about 3.3 lb (1.5 kg).
Mount the light on a junction box, about 71 to 79 in (1.80 to 2 m) from the ground beside a door. IP54 protects against splashing water from all directions, but not against immersion: avoid spots where water pools or runs constantly. Turn off the power at the breaker before any work and have the fixture connected by an electrician, especially outdoors. Use anchors suited to the surface, hollow brick or concrete.
Care
Turn off the power and let the bulb cool. Clean the glass with a cloth and soapy water, then dry. Wipe the aluminum with a damp cloth. Once a year, check that the wall fixings are tight.

Fitted one on the garden shed so we can see the lock at night. Sturdy aluminium body, nice ribbed glass, and it shrugs off the rain. Had a spark wire it in, quick job.

Garage finally sorted
My garage doubles as a workshop and for years it had one bare bulb hanging from the ceiling, which threw shadows everywhere and made it impossible to find a screw on the floor. I wanted something sturdy and a bit nicer to look at, and I've always liked the old ship-style bulkhead lights. I bought three of these and lined them up along the wall above the workbench, about one and a half metres apart, like the listing suggests. An electrician wired them in. They don't come with bulbs, so I chose compact 4000K neutral white LEDs for work, which fit under the glass without any trouble. The difference is huge. The ribbed glass spreads the light along the bench evenly, and there's no blinding hot spot when you look up. The anthracite aluminium body feels solid and the hood over the glass is a nice detail. I also like that they're rated IP54, since the garage gets a bit damp in winter. Very happy with them.Anthracite

Ribbed glass is lovely

We put two of these either side of our front door after the old lantern rusted away. The anthracite matches our gray window frames and the ribbed glass gives a soft, even light on the doorstep, no glare in your eyes when you come home. We had an electrician fit them to the existing boxes, around 1.9 m up. Bulbs aren't included so we went with compact warm white LEDs. They've been through plenty of rain already and look exactly the same.
