Description
Among round outdoor wall lights, this one is a flat, no-frills 6 in (15 cm) black aluminum disc that fades into the facade by day. At night, its LED source gives off a 3000 K warm white, soft enough to welcome, bright enough to light a door or a step. It suits contemporary houses, wood siding and light render, where a lantern would look too busy. Its IP65 rating makes it fit for walls exposed to rain.
Design and materials of these round outdoor wall lights
The housing of this round exterior wall light is aluminum, a light metal that handles the outdoors well, lacquered black. The shape is pared back to the essentials: a low cylinder and a lit face partly capped by a rounded hood. This restraint makes it easy to repeat along a wall without a catalog look. The black makes a graphic dot on white render or light siding and blends into a dark facade. It is the round outdoor wall sconce to choose when you want the light to matter more than the object. It pairs with aluminum window frames, metal railings and black mailboxes.
The light
The LED source produces a 3000 K warm white: a welcoming tone that flatters wood and stone without turning yellow. The 12 W version is enough to mark a door, a gate or a shed. The 18 W version lights more broadly, useful for a patio, a path or a facade where you want to see where you are stepping. No bulb to buy: the light source is built into the fixture.
Where to put a disc wall light
By the front door, a single light at shoulder height, on the lock side, is enough. On a patio, line up three or four every 6.5 ft (2 m) for a steady rhythm on the wall. Along outdoor stairs, mount them at a constant height above the steps. On wood siding, the black and the warm white bring out the grain. It mounts to the wall and connects to the mains at a cable outlet. Turn off the power at the breaker before you start and call an electrician if in doubt. You will need a drill, anchors suited to the surface (brick, block, wood) and a level. Recommended height: 71 to 79 in (1.80 to 2 m) by a door, 12 to 20 in (30 to 50 cm) above a step.
Care
Turn off the power before cleaning. Wipe the housing and the lit face with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid pressure washers, abrasive sponges and solvents, which dull the lacquer. Once or twice a year is enough, clearing cobwebs from around the disc.

Steps are safe again
We have steep outdoor steps down to the garden and my mom nearly tripped on them last winter. We mounted three of these at the same height along the wall, around 40 cm above the steps, and now you can see every edge clearly at night. i'm a qualified electrician, so I fitted two of these myself either side of the garage door. Wiring is simple from a cable outlet, and the housing feels solid, proper aluminium rather than plastic. The 18 W gives good coverage on the drive, so you can see where you're walking at night. The warm white is a nice tone, not that cold blue you get with some outdoor LEDs. We had an old carriage lantern by the front door that always looked a bit twee on our new build, so I went looking for something flatter and more modern. This round black light is exactly that. its a neat aluminium disc with a little hood on top, and during the day you barely notice it against the dark grey cladding. At night it throws a soft circle of warm white light that's enough to find your keys and see the step without lighting up the whole street. We went with the 12 W since its just for the door. The fixture itself is great, my only reason for four stars is that it needed an electrician to connect it to the mains, and we had to wait a fortnight for a slot. We've just finished redoing the outside of our house: new larch cladding, black window frames and a black front door. The old lights were cheap plastic ones that had yellowed, and they were the last thing to go. I ordered four of these, three of the 18 W for the back patio and one 12 W by the front door. Our electrician fitted all four in one morning and said they were easy to wire. The design is really minimal, just a flat black disc with a rounded hood, so the light is the focus rather than the fitting. The warm white at 3000 K looks great against the wood, bringing out the grain without going orange. On the patio we spaced them about two metres apart and it gives a lovely even rhythm along the wall. They've already been through a couple of storms with the rain lashing straight onto that wall, no problems at all. Really happy with how it's all come together.Black, 18 W
