Description
This paper lantern pendant light is simple, luminous good sense: a 16-inch (40 cm) sphere that spreads light evenly without glare. Paper stretched over a metal frame turns the bulb into a milky halo that recalls Japanese lanterns. It is a shade, shipped flat, to fit on a pendant cord set. Light as air, it suits bedrooms, living rooms and Japandi interiors, and anyone who wants calm, soothing light every day.
Design & materials of a Japanese paper pendant light
Paper is the simplest and gentlest material for filtering light. Stretched over a metal frame, it forms a regular ball that sends light in every direction.
That is the principle of the Japanese paper lantern pendant light: the bulb disappears and only a glowing sphere remains, like a moon resting in the room. The white paper pairs with light wood, linen, stone and tatami. This paper ball pendant light is all about restraint: no ornament, just a pure shape. Its visual lightness lets you hang it in a small room without weighing it down, or group several at different heights.
The light
The socket type depends on the cord set you choose. Go for an LED bulb: it runs cool, which is essential next to paper. Keep the bulb centered in the sphere, away from the sides.
For enveloping light, aim for 2700 K, a warm white. An opal globe bulb strengthens the moon effect, with no bright spot showing through the paper. Moderate wattage is enough: the ball diffuses widely and lights a medium-size room.
Where to hang a paper lantern pendant light
In a bedroom, hang it in the center of the ceiling for soft light, or off-center and lower above a nightstand, like a lamp. In a living room, group three round paper pendant lights of similar sizes at different heights over a coffee table or a reading corner.
In a dining room, a 16 in (40 cm) paper lantern pendant dresses a round table 31 to 39 in (80 to 100 cm) across. Pair it with a light wood bench and matte ceramics. More shades and silhouettes are waiting in our pendant lights.

Size & installation
The shade is 16 in (40 cm) in diameter. It ships flat in a 15 × 15 × 0.4 in (39 × 38 × 1 cm) box and weighs 2.4 oz (68 g) with its packaging.
- Gently unfold the ball and fit the frame inside to stretch the paper.
- Mount it on a pendant cord set with a socket, chosen to suit your ceiling.
- Over a table, hang the sphere 28 to 31 in (70 to 80 cm) above the top; in a hallway, keep at least 6.5 ft (2 m) of headroom.
Switch off the power before handling the cord. Call an electrician for any wiring at the ceiling.
Care
Paper tolerates neither water nor rubbing. Dust it with a feather duster, a wide soft brush or a hair dryer on the cool setting. Avoid damp rooms such as a bathroom, where the paper would slacken.

My wife and I have a small cottage with low ceilings, and anything chunky made the living room feel cramped. We wanted soft light without a heavy fixture, and this was the answer. It's 40 cm across, which is a decent size, but because it's paper it looks feather light. The shade itself is just the shade, so we bought a white cord set and our electrician fitted it to the ceiling rose. I'm told by him that you should always use an LED in paper, and we went with a warm white globe. The effect is lovely. In the evening the light spreads evenly and there are no harsh shadows on the walls. The paper is a clean, bright white. We've had plenty of guests ask about it. It's also the cheapest lighting change we've made and possibly the best one. Very pleased, and we're thinking of a second for the bedroom.

Japandi bedroom sorted
my bedroom is all light wood and linen and i wanted something soft and plain for the ceiling. this is it. the light through the paper is so pretty in the evening, like a big glowing moon. heads up you need to buy the cord and socket set seperately, which is clearly written on the page, i just skimmed it lol. my dad did the ceiling part as im renting and didnt want to mess with wires. 10/10Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Replaced a bare bulb in the spare room. Huge difference for not much.

Bought two for the living room as part of a cheap refresh. Assembly was easy: unfold, frame in, done. We had someone in to fit the cord sets to the cieling since we're not confident with wiring. With warm LED globes they make the room so much cosier in the evening than the old spotlights. The white paper looks crisp and clean in daylight too

My daughter wanted one for her uni room. Light enough to post, easy to put together, and she says it makes her room feel less like a dorm.

Honestly didn't expect much from a paper shade but it's great. I went for an LED bulb to keep it cool, as advised, and the light it gives is soft and warm, nothing like the harsh light we had before. The frame keeps the ball round and tidy. Ended up buying another for the landing. Good value.

Hung it above my bed slightly off centre, lower than usual, and it works like a bedside lamp. Freed up so much space on my nightstand and the glow is so gentle.

I'm a landlord doing up a flat between tenants and needed something inexpensive that still looks good. This is my go-to now. Ships flat, so no crushed boxes, goes together in minutes and with a warm LED bulb it makes a plain room look cosy and finished. I've ordered several for different rooms. The electrician who wires the cord sets says they're the easiest shades he deals with.

Nice shade, just bigger than I pictured over my small table.

Put it over the round table in our little kitchen nook. The paper softens the light so nicely and it doesn't feel too big for the space at 40 cm.

Calm light for the nursery
We wanted something gentle for our baby's room, with no harsh light for night feeds. This paper ball with a warm white LED gives a soft glow that doesn't wake anyone up. It went up quickly once the electrician fitted the cord set, and it's well out of reach of little hands. The white paper looks clean and simple with the pale furniture.Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Soft moon in my reading corner
I'd been wanting a paper lantern for ages and kept putting it off because I didn't know how they'd look in a modern apartment. I finally ordered this one for the reading corner of my living room, next to a big armchair and a little side table, and I wish I'd done it sooner. It comes flat in a slim box and weighs almost nothing. You unfold the paper and set the metal frame inside to stretch it, which takes a minute and a bit of patience. I bought a cord set with a fabric cable and had it hung slightly lower than usual so it sits just above head height when I'm sitting. With a 2700K LED globe inside, there's no bright spot at all, just an even glow over the whole sphere. In the evenings it's the only light I switch on and the room feels so calm. I dust it every few weeks with a soft brush and it still looks brand new.Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Simple and effective
I've done a few rooms in our house with cheap paper lanterns before and they always ended up looking a bit sad and saggy. This one is different because the frame inside keeps the paper properly stretched, so it stays a neat round ball. It's 40 cm, which is a good size for a living room, and it's so light that hanging it is no effort at all once the cord set is in. I'm comfortable with wiring so I fitted the cord set myself with the power off. I used a 2700K LED globe and the light is warm and very even across the whole sphere. It's not a light for close work, but for the general feel of the room in the evening it's spot on. My partner, who was sceptical, now says it's her favourite light in the house. Definitely good value.Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Simple, light and cheap compared with the designer versions. i used an LED bulb since it's paper, and my electrician wired the cord set at the cieling in no time. Looks smart in the hallway

Reviews helped me decide, so here's mine. I wanted a big, soft light over the dining table in our open plan living room, something that didn't block the view across the room like a heavy fixture. The 16 inch paper ball turned out to be perfect. Our table is round and about 90 cm across, and the size looks right above it, not too big, not too small. It arrived flat in an almost weightless box, and setting it up is just unfolding the paper and putting the frame in to stretch it. I chose a black cord set to tie in with our chairs, and it was hung at about 75 cm above the table. With a 2700K LED globe the light is warm and diffused, and there's no glare when you're sitting and looking up at it. In the evening it's lovely, the whole table glows. The only thing I'd say is keep it away from the kitchen steam, as the listing warns, so we hung it a little further from the stove :)

Bought this for the living room of our flat to replace a horrible old fitting. Good to know before you order: it's just the paper shade, so you need a pendant cord set with a socket, which I picked up separately in black. It arrives completely flat, which made me nervous, but you unfold it and push the wire frame inside and it pops into a proper ball. I put in a warm 2700K LED globe like the listing suggests and the whole thing glows like a moon. No bright spot at all.

Thanks for walking others through the setup, James. A moon-like glow is exactly what it's made for!

i love the look and the light is really soft. Four stars only because i didn't realize I'd need an electrician to wire the cord set at the ceiling, which added cost. The description does say so, i just missed it. Once it was up it looked great over our dining table and the paper diffuses the light nicely.

Thank you Andrea, and sorry the extra step caught you off guard. Ceiling wiring is a job for a pro, and we're happy it looks great over your table.

Thanks Savannah. We sell it as a shade so you can choose your cord length and colour, and we're glad you like the look.

A gift that went down well
I bought this as a housewarming present for my brother and his girlfriend along with a cord set. They put it in their bedroom and sent me a picture that evening. The paper glow looks gorgeous and they say the light is perfect for reading before sleep. It was so easy to wrap since it arrives flat, which was a bonus!Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Moon on the ceiling

The cheapest upgrade I've made
We moved into a new build where every room had a plain white plastic ceiling fitting. It all felt very clinical, so I started swapping them out one at a time, and this was the first. I wasn't sure how a paper ball would look in a modern room, but it's lovely. It arrives completely flat in a thin box. When I unfolded it I panicked for a second because it looked like a crumpled lantern, but once the metal frame is inside the paper stretches out nicely into a round ball. You do need a separate pendant cord set with a socket, and my partner, who's an electrician, fitted it in the bedroom for me. I used a warm white LED globe as recommended, and the light is soft and even, no hot spot. In the evening the bedroom feels warm and quiet, which is what I was after. Next up is the hallway, and I'll probably get another one of these.Ø 16 in (40 cm)

Cheap and cheerful in the best way
I'll admit i expected something flimsy at this price, but it's nicely made. The paper is stretched evenly over the frame once you put it together and there are no creases from being shipped flat. We hung it over our round dining table, about 75 cm above the top, and it looks like it was always meant to be there. A warm white globe LED was the right call, the light is gentle and even!!Ø 16 in (40 cm)
