Description
This exterior wall lantern takes on the silhouette of the facade lanterns of old: a black frame, clear glass, an arm that holds it away from the wall. At night, it marks the front door and softens the arrival on the front step. It is meant for anyone who wants facade lighting with old-world character, for a farmhouse, a townhouse or a newer home that needs warming up. Its IP44 rating protects it from splashing water, and its E27 base takes a standard bulb.
Design and materials of this exterior wall lantern
The body is molded in a sturdy black plastic that will not rust or flake like painted metal. It frames a glass diffuser that shows the bulb and gives a clear, direct light. As an outdoor wall lantern, its lines follow the classic vocabulary: a cap, slim uprights, a tapered base. The arm is reversible: the lantern can sit above the arm, like a traditional outdoor sconce, or hang below it, closer to a porch lantern. You make this choice at installation, depending on your wall height and the look you want. The black pairs with charcoal window frames, wooden shutters and stone.
The light
The E27 base takes a standard bulb, ideally an LED to limit heat inside the glass. For a welcoming facade, stay with a 2700 K warm white: the light recalls a flame and flatters stone and wood. A visible filament bulb reinforces the old-world style, since the glass shows it off. To light a longer path, choose a brighter bulb rather than a cooler tone.
Where to put lantern front door lights
At the entrance, mount two, one on each side of the door, for a symmetrical facade; on a narrow door, a single one on the lock side is enough. On a patio, line them up every 6.5 to 10 ft (2 to 3 m) along the wall to mark the way without glare. Under an awning or a porch, hanging the lantern below the arm frees up headroom. As an outdoor lantern wall sconce, it also sits well beside a more discreet vintage light on the garage. Find more lantern outdoor wall lights in our outdoor wall lights.

Size and installation

- Depth: up to 7 in (17.5 cm).

The light mounts to the wall and connects to a 220-240 V cable outlet. Turn off the power at the breaker before any work and have an electrician do the wiring if in doubt. You will need a drill, anchors suited to your facade and a level. Mount it 67 to 79 in (1.70 to 2 m) from the ground, on either side of the door or on the handle side.
Care
Turn off the power and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Wipe the body with a damp cloth, with no abrasive cleaner. Clean the glass with soapy water or glass cleaner. Twice a year, remove leaves, cobwebs and insects that collect inside, especially in the fall.

We mounted it with the lantern hanging below the arm under our porch roof, which works much better with the low ceiling there. Love that you can choose. With a warm filament bulb behind the clear glass it looks like an old gas lamp. The black matches our charcoal window frames. It's been out through a few rainy nights and still looks just as good.

Warm welcome
Bought two for my parents' farmhouse front door as a gift when they had the porch redone. Dad loves that the arm can go either way, they went for lantern up. With warm bulbs it's so welcoming when you pull into the drive. The glass is easy to clean.Black

When we bought our house the front door had a single bare bulb in a cracked fitting, and coming home in the dark felt a bit grim. I wanted something with old-world charm that would suit the wooden shutters, and this lantern is exactly that. We put one on the lock side of the door since our door is narrow, as the listing suggests, and it's plenty. My father-in-law is an electrician and fitted it in no time. It's rated IP44 so I'm not worried about rain hitting the facade. With a warm white filament bulb it looks beautiful at night, like a little lamp waiting for you. Neighbours have asked where it's from. Really pleased, and it cost a lot less than similar ones I'd seen elsewhere.

I'll keep this practical. We needed lighting on our side patio where we eat in summer, and I wanted something traditional to suit the stone wall. I bought three and spaced them about 2.5 m apart along the wall, which is roughly what the description suggests. Mounting is straightforward, and the arm is reversible, so I set them with the lantern sitting above the arm for a classic sconce look. An electrician did the wiring since it's mains outdoors, and I wouldn't do that myself. I chose 2700 K LED bulbs as recommended, so the glass doesn't get hot and the light is warm. They give a gentle, even light along the patio without glaring in anyone's eyes. The black body looks good against the stone. Twice a year I clean out the leaves and spiders, which is easy. Good value for three.

Replaced a rusty old light by the garage. The body is plastic so there's no rust to worry about, and it looks smart in black. Electrician had it up quickly.

Lovely lantern, looks very traditional. I'd assumed it was metal from the photos, but it's a sturdy plastic, which the specs do say. It looks great on the wall and won't rust, so I'm fine with it.

our new build looked a bit bare from the street, so we added two of these by the front door at about 1.8 m. It instantly gives the facade some character, like an older townhouse. The glass is clear so a nice filament bulb is on show. It's lighter than I expected, which made fitting easy for our electrician. Very happy with how it looks at night.

Looks the part
Really nice classic lantern for our cottage. Had to get an electrician out to wire it to the outside cable, wich took a while to arrange. Looks lovely with a filament bulbBlack
