Description

This ball wall sconce comes down to a frosted opal glass globe on a base so discreet you barely notice it. Lit, the sphere becomes a small glowing orb, with no bright spot and no glare. It suits anyone looking for accent lighting that is graphic but quiet: on each side of a bed, along a hallway, next to a mirror. Two diameters, 4.7 and 6 in (12 and 15 cm), let you match it to the size of the wall and the volume of the room.

Design & materials of a frosted glass wall sconce

The globe is milky white glass, frosted over its whole surface. This matte finish breaks up reflections and spreads the light evenly: you see a full, glowing sphere, never the shape of the bulb. The base, kept to a minimum and hidden behind the ball, lets the object almost float in front of the wall. The design is deliberately elemental, a pure shape that fits a Japandi, Scandinavian or warm modern interior. Switched off, this milk glass wall sconce keeps its presence: an opal pearl, matte and soft to the eye, that pairs as well with white plaster as with lime wash or a deep paint color.

The light

The sconce takes a G9 LED bulb, included. The original bulb gives cool white light, between 5500 and 7000 K: a crisp, daylight-like light, useful by a mirror or in a windowless entryway. For a softer mood in a bedroom, replace it with a 2700 or 3000 K warm white G9 bulb. The sconce is not dimmable. The frosted glass softens the source and turns the ball into an even halo, lighting a small area of 30 to 55 sq ft (3 to 5 m²).

Where to put a ball wall sconce

In a bedroom, a pair of 4.7 in (12 cm) globes on either side of the headboard replaces bedside lamps and frees the nightstands. In a hallway or entryway, line up two or three every 5 to 6.5 ft (1.5 to 2 m): the rhythm of the spheres marks the way. In the bathroom, the 6 in (15 cm) model frames a mirror 24 to 32 in (60 to 80 cm) wide well, one sconce on each side, at face height. The maker describes this opal wall light as humidity resistant, but gives no IP rating: keep it away from water splashes. Other sphere wall light shapes are waiting in our wall sconces, the place to compare every ball wall light we carry.

Size & installation

  • Globe diameter: 4.7 in (12 cm) or 6 in (15 cm).
  • Weight: 1.3 lb (600 g).
  • Mounting: concealed wall base, installation required.

The sconce wires to a wall junction box. Always switch off the breaker before working and have an electrician make the connection if you are not used to it. You will need a drill, anchors suited to the surface (drywall, brick, concrete) and a level. By the bed, mount it 24 to 28 in (60 to 70 cm) above the mattress; in a hallway, around 63 to 67 in (160 to 170 cm) from the floor, at eye level.

Care

Switch off the power and let the bulb cool before cleaning. Dust the globe with a soft, dry cloth; for a mark, a slightly damp cloth is enough, then dry right away. Avoid abrasive products, which would mark the frosting, and hold the ball with both hands when removing it: the glass is fragile.

Questions

Before you choose

Answers to the questions we hear about this piece.

Still have a question? Get in touch
01Which size ball wall sconce should I choose, 4.7 or 6 in?
The 4.7 in (12 cm) globe suits a bedside, a small hallway or a room with a low ceiling. The 6 in (15 cm) model makes more of a statement: it holds its own around a large mirror, on an entryway wall or in a tall room. In a pair, keep the same diameter on both sides.
02Is the bulb included?
Yes, a G9 LED bulb is included, in cool white from 5500 to 7000 K. If you prefer warmer light, a 2700 or 3000 K G9 LED bulb can replace it, as long as it fits inside the globe.
03Can I install it in a bathroom?
The maker presents it as humidity resistant, but no IP protection rating is given. Keep it to a wall away from the shower and tub, for example next to the mirror, and have an electrician approve the location.
04Is it dimmable?
No, this sconce is not designed for a dimmer: it switches on and off, with no brightness control. To change the mood, play on the color temperature of the G9 bulb instead: warm white for a bedroom, neutral white for an entryway.
