Description
This magnetic wall sconce comes down to a single line: a 20 in (50 cm) stainless steel bar that attaches to the wall by magnet and runs on a rechargeable battery. No wire to run, no channel cut into the plaster. It lights a headboard, a hallway or a stairwell where there is no electrical outlet. Design and materials
The body is black stainless steel, a rigid material that keeps a straight, clean line. The contemporary design sticks to the essentials: an elongated profile, no shade, held by a small round wall plate. Off, the bar reads as a graphic stroke on the wall; on, it lights up along its full length and casts a vertical glow on the wall. This black linear wall light suits minimalist interiors, polished concrete walls and limewash alike. The black echoes metal window frames, handles and iron fixtures.
The light
The source is an LED powered by the battery built into the sconce, at very low voltage. The light stretches along the whole bar and spreads across the wall, for ambient rather than reading light. It turns on and off from a distance with the remote, handy when it is mounted high in a stairwell. For a consistent mood, choose warm white bulbs, around 2700 to 3000 K, in the other lamps in the room.
Where to put this magnetic wall lamp
In a bedroom, a pair on either side of the bed replaces bedside lamps and frees up the nightstands. In a hallway with no outlet, two or three bars spaced 5 ft (1.5 m) apart mark the way. Size and installation of a magnetic rechargeable wall sconce
- Length: 20 in (50 cm).

The magnetic system means no connection at all: no breaker to turn off, no electrician. Mount the plate to the wall following the instructions, with anchors suited to your wall, then set the sconce in place, where the magnet holds it. Take it off to recharge it. By the bed, mount it 28 to 31 in (70 to 80 cm) above the mattress; in a hallway, about 63 to 67 in (160 to 170 cm) from the floor.
Care
Take the sconce off its plate and switch it off before cleaning. Wipe the black steel with a soft, dry cloth. For a mark, a barely damp cloth is enough, then dry. Use no abrasive cleaner and no spray aimed at the LED. Recharge the battery regularly, without waiting for it to run completely flat.

Our staircase has always been dark and there's no electrical point anywhere along it. We looked into getting lights wired in but the quote was huge and involved chasing cables through the plaster, so i went looking for something battery powered that didn't look cheap. These were the answer. i bought three, one at each landing, mounted at about shoulder height. Each one has a small round plate that you screw to the wall with anchors, and the bar just attaches to it with a magnet. It's very satisfying when it clicks into place. The light runs along the full length of the bar and washes the wall, so the stairs feel much safer at night. i use the remote to switch them on from the bottom of the stairs, which is brilliant because the top one is quite high up. When the battery needs charging i just lift it off the plate. They look smart, like black lines drawn on the wall, and match our black stair rail.

I've been renting the same flat for years and I've always hated that the bedroom only has a ceiling light. I didn't want to ask the landlord about wiring wall lights, so I'd given up until a friend sent me these. I put one either side of the bed, about 75 cm above the mattress like the page suggests. Lovely looking light and the glow on the wall is beautiful in the evening. I'd assumed it would be bright enough to read by in bed, but it's an ambient light, which the page does say, so that's on me. I've kept it as a mood light and it's great for that.
