Description
This bedside reading sconce mounts above the bed and aims a precise beam at your reading. Its magnetic spot turns 360°, switches on with a light touch and runs on a rechargeable battery: no cord runs down the headboard. The light, deliberately soft, lights the page without waking the person sleeping next to you. It is made for night readers, guest rooms and small bedrooms where the nightstand is short on space.
Design & materials of a magnetic wall sconce
The black ABS body stays small and discreet, almost graphic on a pale wall or above a linen headboard. The spot is held by a magnet and turns 360°, to aim at a book, an e-reader or the corner of an armchair. With no cable, there is nothing to hide behind the bed and nothing hanging down. For anyone looking for a magnetic rechargeable wall sconce with no work involved, it is the simplest answer. The minimal design suits a Japandi interior, a light wood bedroom or an upholstered headboard.
The light of these reading sconces for the bedroom
The source is a dimmable LED with a modest output, designed for close-up reading. It is a companion light, not room lighting: it lights a page, an e-reader or a notebook, and leaves the rest of the bedroom in soft shadow. To read late, set it to the lowest level and give the room ambient light in warm white, 2700 K, from the ceiling or a dresser.
Where to put a bedside reading sconce
Above a double bed, mount one on each side: everyone reads at their own pace. These wall sconces for reading in bed also suit a child's or teenager's room as an adjustable reading light that keeps the nightstand clear. In a living room, mount it above a reading chair, about 51 in (1.30 m) from the floor. Like other wall mounted reading lights for the bedroom, it also stands in for a bedside lamp in a guest room. Size & installation
The reading light comes in a single finish, black. For comfortable reading, mount it 12 to 16 in (30 to 40 cm) above the top of the headboard, set 8 to 12 in (20 to 30 cm) toward the outer edge of the mattress, so the beam falls on the page and not on your face. Because it runs on a battery, no wiring is needed: just keep it easy to reach for recharging. The package weighs only about 6 oz (180 g), a very light load for a wall. Test the position with the light on before fixing it for good.
Care
Wipe the body and spot with a dry microfiber cloth. Dust the magnet's contact area so the spot stays firmly in place. Avoid water and household cleaners near the touch area. Recharge the battery before it runs flat and, if the room stays empty for a long time, switch the sconce off.

Finally, peace at bedtime
My other half reads till midnight and I fall asleep at ten. We used to argue about the big light every night. Bought one of these for his side, mounted it about a ruler's length above the headboard and towards the edge of the bed like the instructions say. The beam is narrow enough that I'm in the dark and he can read. Marriage saved, basically.Black

Guest room was missing a reading light. Sorted, and guests have commented.

Our guest room essential
We always felt bad that guests had no light to read by. This went up in a few minutes above the spare bed and looks tidy. Several friends have asked where it's from after staying over.Black

Mounted above my side of the bed in about five minutes. The spot swivels easily and stays where you put it thanks to the magnet. Lowest setting is great for reading without keeping my girlfriend awake.

Reads well, no cables.

My reading nook needed this
I built a little window-seat reading nook in the spare room and there's no outlet anywhere near it. I mounted this on the wall above the cushions and turned the spot so it lands on my lap. Being rechargeable it was the only option that didn't involve an extension lead across the floor. The touch control is easy and I keep it pretty low because I read mostly in the evening. Looks discreet in black against the pale wall.Black

Bought one for my dad who reads in his armchair every evening. He found it easy to use with the touch switch and said the light is gentle on his eyes. Very pleased.

Smart solution
Lights my book and nothing else. Partner sleeps through it.Black

No cable running down the wall, which was the whole point for me. The black body is small and neat above our headboard. Touch to switch on, touch to change brightness.

Love the magnetic head
The spot pops on with a magnet and rotates in a full circle, so I can aim it at my knitting in the evening or my book at night. Very clever little design and it looks good too.Black

Knitting and reading, a well-used light! Thanks so much, Sam.

Bought for my side of the bed, works great and looks minimal on the wall.

Light works well and looks neat. Three stars because the instructions were pretty basic and I had to work out the best height myself. The info on the website was more helpful than the leaflet.

Thanks Samantha, fair feedback. The height and offset tips on the page are the ones we recommend, and we'll look at making the leaflet clearer.

Put this in my daughter's bunk bed corner so she can read without waking her sister. The spot turns to point exactly where she needs it. Very light and easy to fix on the wall.

Good gift
Bought this for my nan, who reads in bed but kept knocking her lamp over reaching for it. Now it's on the wall above her and she just taps it. She's delighted and says it's the best present she's had in years.Black

We have a japandi bedroom with light wood everywhere and a linen headboard. I wanted something graphic and small, and the black body looks almost like a little sculpture on the white wall. Charges easily too.

So much better than a lamp on my cluttered bedside table. The light points exactly where I want it and my partner doesnt get disturbed. Charging it is easy.

Got this for my teenage son's room so he'd stop using his phone torch to read in bed. Now he has no excuse. It's light, it was easy to put up, and it looks smart on his dark wall.

Wife wanted bedside lamps but our nightstands are tiny. Got two of these instead and mounted them above the headboard. She uses hers every night and says the lowest setting is perfect for late reading

Clever little light
I'm a renter so I couldn't wire anything into the wall, and I didn't want a cord dangling behind the bed either. This runs on its battery so it went up in a couple of minutes. The magnetic spot is the clever bit, you can twist it in any direction, so I point it at my kindle at night and at the armchair in the corner when I'm sitting there. Light is soft and focused. Recharging is easy since I mounted it where I can reach.Black

Nice, just one color
Works realy well and the light is just right for a book. I'd have loved a white version for my white bedroom though, the black stands out more than I wanted. Not a fault, just personal taste.Black
Opalyne replied
Thank you Harper, that's useful to hear. Black is the only finish for now, but we'll pass on the request for a white one.

I mounted it above the bed at about 30 cm over the headboard. The light lands on my page and not in my eyes, exactly as described. Recharging is simple, I just do it every so often.

I've had a long hunt for a proper reading light that doesn't need any wiring. Our bed has a padded fabric headboard and the wall behind it had no outlet nearby, so a corded lamp would have meant a trailing cable across the floor. This sconce solved it. It's rechargeable, so I mounted it on the wall above the headboard, not on the fabric, about 35 cm up and offset towards the edge. The spot is held by a magnet and you can turn it all the way round, which is handy because I sometimes read sitting up and sometimes lying on my side. The light is soft, focused on a small area, and leaves my partner's side dark. I tap it for on, off and to adjust brightness. It's become my favourite thing in the bedroom, and I've ordered another one for my mother

Ideal for a small bedroom
Our bedroom is tiny, the bed takes up almost all of it and there's only room for a little shelf on each side. A table lamp was out of the question and I really didn't want to put wired lights into a rental. I found this by searching for battery reading lights and decided to try one. It's very light, the whole thing barely weighs anything, and it was up on the wall in minutes. The magnetic head swivels 360 degrees, so I can aim it straight down on my book or tilt it towards the window seat where I sometimes read. You tap the body to turn it on and to change the brightness, and I use the lowest setting at night. My partner sleeps right through it. I recharge it when it starts getting low and that's about it for maintenance. Honestly one of the best small things I've bought for the flat.Black

Good light, slow parcel
I'll keep this fair because the light itself is great. I read every night and my partner is up at five for work, so I needed something that would light my book and not his face. This does exactly that, the spot turns right round and I've got it angled so the beam lands on the page and nowhere else. The touch control is easy to find in the dark and I keep it on the lowest setting most nights. The three stars are about delivery. It took much longer than the estimate and the tracking sat on the same status for over a week, so I was chasing it. The box was fine when it came. If it had turned up on time this would be five stars without question.Black
Opalyne replied
Sorry for the long wait and the tracking that wouldn't move, Lyla, that's frustrating. We're really glad the beam is doing its job for your late-night reading.
